Indaturan listened thoughtfully to what Sarah had found in her observation of Naria and Draylian’s minds before turning to Ystelyan.

“Your alra Talira’s family are here, aren’t they? Do you think her mother might allow Sarah-alra to look at her mind and confirm her suspicions about this?” Read the rest of this entry »

“My mirian would have understood why the negotiations had to be paused,” Adrian said when he arrived a little later as they were just finishing their meal. “This meeting you have to go to is clearly of critical importance.”

“Yes, but it still wouldn’t be polite,” Matthias said. “And anyway, Sal thinks she found something and would like to share it.” Read the rest of this entry »

“That went well,” Daniel said as they headed back to their house. “I was freaked out when Arran appeared behind us.”

“Hmm, well, we should have considered they might sense someone scrying for them,” Matthias said. “It’s fortunate they were friendly. I think we’ve found some important allies here, and I think their appearance will help us flush Garrett out. He’s not expecting this and he doesn’t do well with surprises. Hopefully he’ll slip up and say something he regrets.” Read the rest of this entry »

Lucas arrived even as Alison was agreeing to allow him to look in her mind. He headed straight over to her and offered her his hand.

“Let’s get this over with,” he said. “Before you change your mind.”

“I won’t change my mind,” Alison said. “But getting it over with is probably a good idea.” Read the rest of this entry »

Valeria recognized Alison even before they were introduced. Not only was she was the youngest girl in the group but as soon as she’d entered the room, the girl had squeaked and hidden behind one of the adults. Valeria had expected to feel to same rage as she had when she met Julie – or even more, since this girl was the one who had actually killed her husband – but Alison looked terrified and so fragile that she found that she couldn’t really hold on to her anger in the face of such obvious pain and fear. The man she had hidden behind stepped to one side and put his arm around her shoulder before looking at Valeria.

“You are Queen Valeria?” he asked. Read the rest of this entry »

The group left Faith and her family settling into a couple of free rooms in one of the dorm houses and headed straight back to the one where they were staying. No sooner were they through the door than Lydia ran across the room and hugged Daniel.

“Oh God, you’re okay! Thank goodness! I was so worried.”

Daniel froze in surprise for a moment before hugging her back. “I’m fine, Lyd. We were never in any danger. The Silvers seem quite friendly.”

“What happened?” Lyrrekka asked from the sofa. “I gather they came back with you?” Read the rest of this entry »

Sonia looked taken aback at Faith’s easy agreement.

The other woman must have noticed because she grinned in response. “You usually have a hard time getting families to agree to join your group?”

Sonia nodded. “Well, lost lines don’t turn up very often but yes, they tend to fear being subsumed – and most of them didn’t have their first encounter with the families by one of them trying to kill them. We expected that to make things harder.”

Faith chuckled. “Well, yes, I might have been more cautious but you did send Alison, Logan and the others back unharmed when you would have been justified in not doing so.” She paused and pointed to the sky. “And then there’s that. You need our help and in the circumstances it would be remiss of us to refuse it.” Read the rest of this entry »

Silence followed Alison’s statement. Daniel stared at the girl; she was still hugging herself but now had a defiant look on her face as if she were daring them to argue with her. He risked a look sideways at his parents and saw they looked just as stunned as he felt.

“How?” Matthias asked eventually.

“The normal way, I imagine,” Alison said. Read the rest of this entry »

“Mum! Dad!” Daniel rose to his feet as Arran led his parents and Sarah Tyler. “You came! What about the meeting?”

“You’re more important than the meeting, Dan,” Sonia said. “We were worried.”

“We wouldn’t have detained them,” the woman said. “We just wanted to know what’s going on.” She held out a plate piled high with burgers. “Please join us. I am Faith Silver, these are my brothers Arran and Edward.” She nodded to Arran and th Read the rest of this entry »

“Mum! Dad!” Lydia leapt to her her feet as Sonia and Matthias came into the lounge. “It’s all gone wrong! What are we going to do?”

“Hush, Lyd,” Matthias said. “It’s not your fault. There’s no way you could have predicted this. The good news is that we don’t sense any danger to Dan, so this family probably isn’t hostile. As to what we are going to do: Sonia and I are going to talk to them. Probably Sarah as well.”

“Definitely!” Sarah said. Read the rest of this entry »
