Two different kinds of hunger woke Lydia the next morning: both the not-unexpected hunger for energy but the more normal hunger for physical food. She lay there staring at the ceiling as she tried to decide which she should deal with first. She still hadn’t decided when there was a quiet rap on the door. She sat up and realise Karen wasn’t there. Had she already got up or had she not come back last night? She looked back at the door as the knock was repeated. “Come in!”

“Morning, Lyd.” Her mother came in carrying a tray with Lyrrekka behind her. “How are you feeling?” Read the rest of this entry »

Karen sat on her bed leafing through a novel but if she was honest with herself she wasn’t really reading it. She was hyperaware of Lydia, who had fallen asleep almost as soon as they got home. With her eyes closed, her sister looked unchanged – but her energy told a different story. Even though she knew it was a good thing, there was something distinctly odd about sensing a dragon without their hunger scratching at her skin. The fact the dragon was her sister just made it doubly odd.

“I can feel you doing that you know, Kaz,” Lydia said suddenly. Her eyes were still closed but she had rolled onto her back. Read the rest of this entry »

“What?” Alaryia was staring at Lydia with naked shock on her face. “But–”

“I knew it!” Sarah said. “I didn’t want to get her hopes up but I could tell something was different. She didn’t seem to have the hooks in her mind that I’ve sensed when I scanned full Kithreiri and I thought it was them being torn out that caused the constant hunger.” Read the rest of this entry »

Bennu arrived within minutes and perched at the end of Lydia’s bed.

“I’ll stop her frenzying,” he said before anyone could explain what was going on. He tilted his head at Alaryia. “I was listening in.”

“Ah!” She turned her attention back to Lydia. “This shouldn’t be too hard on you as your essence isn’t too torn up yet. I hope it won’t be, anyway, but any transformation of this kind is unpleasant.” Read the rest of this entry »

The stunned silence in the room told Karen that Lydia’s suggestion had not occurred to any of the dragons. After a long moment, Indaturan frowned thoughtfully.

“Would that work, given that she’s not full Kithreia yet?”

“I don’t know.” Alaryia was scowling thoughtfully even though she still had her eyes closed and was still glowing silver. “Would it be safe? You know how risky being twice-made in quick succession is.” Read the rest of this entry »

Karen sat by Lydia and held her sister’s hand while Alaryia examined her. She wanted to reach out and touch the wings of silver flame that had erupted from her sister’s shoulders just before their escape but she had an inkling that even though they weren’t singeing their surroundings, they would singe her if she tried that.

“Well?” Sonia asked from here she was standing at Lydia’s head, wringing her hands. Read the rest of this entry »

“Who are you?” Lydia asked. “What do you mean I’m changing faster than I should?”

“I told you, I’m a friend of Anda’s,” the stranger replied. “And I can see the changes in your essence and I wouldn’t expect it to be in this stage for another few hours. How do your shoulders feel?”

“Worse,” Lydia said. “I feel like I’m being stabbed in the back of my shoulders.” Read the rest of this entry »

Even with the pedant Darlryan had given her, Karen nearly vomited when they jumped into Kithra. Everything seemed to be moving – even the ground under her feet – and the sky was a swirling mass of colour with no visible sun or other celestial objects.

She gasped in a breath and grabbed the pendant. As she did, it started to hum and the ground stabilized around her. Unfortunately the sky retained its lurid colours. At least she could see the citadel now. Read the rest of this entry »

“Are you sure I can’t help somehow?” Elzaria said as Darlryan handed out the pendants to the humans.

“Unlikely,” Darlryan said, not unkindly. “Unless you have some insights you can share.”

“I wish.” Elzaria said. “But I feel so useless.” Read the rest of this entry »

“I believe Xantaria is keeping the girl in her own citadel on Kithra,” Elatria said. “You really are going to need an army to crack that.”

“Xantaria has her blind spots–” Darlryan broke off as Sonia and Matthias both gasped.

“Lyd’s awake,” Sonia said. “It;s very hazy but she’s hurting and she feels sick.” Read the rest of this entry »
