“How long do you think it’ll be?” Mela asked. She was sitting on the bridge Lyrrekka had built from her essence with her back against the slick surface of the wards around the Heart. She could feel it in her head and it didn’t seem too concerned about the delay, though it was definitely impatient to be free and that was making her twitchy.

“Probably not long,” Lyrrekka said. “It depends how much that Laxmi person manages to delay them. The warding itself shouldn’t take too long.” She laid a hand against the glowing silver wards. “You’ll be out soon, but why are you so impatient? You could have waited until you finished healing.” Read the rest of this entry »

“Sean!” It was Kyle who broke the silence. He’d gone pale and was staring at the spot where Sean had been standing only moments before. “D-did he… why…” He broke off with a sob and glared at the glowing gate. “Damn, I wish I could destroy you!” He gasped in a few breaths and waved his hand, releasing the others. “We’ll just have to find some other way to rein you in.” He turned towards the exit, clearly intending to leave.

The Core made a shrieking sound and fired another blast at him and Darya. Both of them attempted to jump out of the way but this time, neither was fast enough. The blast ripped through Kyle’s shield with only slightly more difficulty than it had Sean’s.

The double scream clawed at Karen’s nerves as she closed her eyes tightly in an attempt to stop her tears. As the echo of the screaming faded, Karen opened her eyes cautiously and immediately wished she hadn’t.

Kyle and Darya had left bodies, it seemed. They were lying together at the centre of the chamber and there was blood everywhere. She steeled herself and walked over to Kyle, reaching down to feel for a pulse – there was none. She looked at the others who were gathering around her and shook her head.

It’s lucky for you creatures that I still need you, the Core said. But I can’t have you talking about what happened. A roaring noise filled Karen head and the world faded to black.

When Kyle came to, he was lying on something soft and the scent of something delicious was tickling his nose. His stomach rumbled at the smell but he didn’t open his eyes. Instead, he lay there trying to work out where he was and how he’d got there. The last thing he remembered, the Core had killed Sean and had been trying to kill him and Darya… Darya!

“I’m right here,” his heart friend said.

Kyle opened his eyes cautiously and found Darya seated beside the bed he was lying in. The delicious smell was coming from a covered bowl sitting on the table next to him. His stomach rumbled again at the sight but he forced himself to deal with more important questions first.

“Why aren’t we dead?” He paused and looked at his heart friend. “Why are you wearing goblin silk?” He sat up and looked around. The room he was in was decorated with water themed tapestries and had no windows. He had the distinct impression they were underground. “Where is this?”

“Eat your stew and I’ll tell you everything – though I think you’ll be mad at me,” Darya said.

“Why, did you make a deal with a dragon to save me or something?” he said jokingly, then frowned when Darya looked away guiltily. “You mean you did? I don’t feel any dragons nearby.”

“The room is warded.” He seemed surprised that Kyle wasn’t yelling at him. To be honest, Kyle was surprised himself. “Like I said, eat your food and I’ll tell you the whole story. He says there’s no strings and he’ll get us back to Earth if we want.”

“And the unicorn you mentioned confirmed this?” Kyle asked as he took the lid of the bowl to reveal an appetizing looking stew – it even had vegetables in it.

“She did… and that the stew isn’t poisoned.”

“Hmm… I suppose you’d better tell me the whole story then. We can’t make a decision without both of us having all the facts.” He picked up the spoon and began to eat.

“What happened?” Andrew asked.

Laxmi looked up at him with a wan smile. “Your family won this one, thanks to the help they got from the first dragon,” she replied. “I don’t think there’s any way for Jayden to stop them placing the wards back on the Core now.” She didn’t sound disappointed about that. “I’m just glad that he’s not ang-” She broke off as the door opened and a young black man not much older than Andrew came in. For some reason, he looked a bit nauseous when he saw Laxmi. He also seemed to be studiously ignoring Andrew. Read the rest of this entry »

Laxmi’s brows knitted together in a worried frown as Alaryia leapt between her and Ema. Hannah had the distinct impression that the Indian woman really did not want to fight the dragon. Indeed, she backed away rapidly.

“Oh, now don’t go running away,” Alaryia said. “We need to ask you some questions.” Ropes of light span from Alaryia fingers and flew towards Laxmi. Read the rest of this entry »

Stop him, you wretched humans! The Core’s mental scream tore along Karen’s nerves like fire. From the groans she heard from the others, it was affecting them the same way. Only Kyle seemed unaffected as he stalked towards the now open gate.

“They’re a little tied up,” Kyle said mockingly. “It’s just you and me now.” Water swirled around his hands as he charged extra power into his next shot. He leapt to one side as a glowing blast of energy shot at him from the gate. “Tsk, you’ll have to be faster than that. Now why don’t you tell them about how you only haven’t killed off humanity yet because you need them to fight the dragons for you?” Read the rest of this entry »

Andrew watched Jayden Emms hard for any sign that the man was aware he was monitoring Kifarin, but he seemed too preoccupied with monitoring the fight himself. Indeed he was pacing up and down the room looking more and more anxious. Suddenly he stopped and scowled at something.

“What the hell is he doing? I told him not to-” he broke off as an indecipherable expression crossed his face followed by a mixture of anger and extreme sorrow. “Oh, Huldre, I was unconscious all that time. I never thought about what it must have been like for you,” he murmured.

Andrew cautiously reached out to Kifarin, but he was involved in a tough fight with Halia and had no idea what Huldre might be doing. He eyed Emms cautiously for a moment before pushing another instruction at Kifarin.

If you can manage it without arousing suspicion let Halia capture you.

Kifarin didn’t respond with words but a sense of mental assent was pushed at him. Andrew got the sense the dragon wasn’t upset with the order. For a moment he wondered why he wasn’t speaking but as soon as the thought entered his head he realised it was to minimise the risk of them being caught.

He looked back up at Emms and found the man was now staring out of the window, still totally distracted.

You have to stop this, Huldre, Emms was either so upset that he didn’t realise he was leaking or he wanted Andrew to hear it for some reason. Neither of us will get what we want if you get us both kill- He broke off with a gasp. Laxmi! They’re going after Laxmi! You must stop them catching her. If they– He cocked his head as if listening. I don’t care if she can beat the daoine girl, the others will go after her. Protecting her is more important than stopping them reaching the core. She knows where we are and if they find out what she is… He trailed off. You can’t win against three of them. Just make sure to bring Laxmi back. We’ll talk then. He turned from the window and walked slowly to one of the chairs that stood around the walls and sank down into it. Andrew tried not to stare at him but the sight of tear tracks drying on Emms’ face was unexpected.

I’d say it was some sort of trick, Kimi said in Andrew’s head. But I can’t see what he’d hope to gain from it and he was really upset.

That’s pretty much what I was thinking, Andrew agreed. But he doesn’t seem the type to leak.

He’s linked to this thing in order to use it. Perhaps that’s how.

Perhaps, but we’ll worry about it later. I want to see how Kifarin’s doing.

Hannah shook with the effort of holding their patch of ground together. She was vaguely aware that Matthias and Lydia had leapt across the gulf between them and the firm ground to take on Huldre, but she was more intent on her task and on watching Ema.

Laxmi must have sensed her coming because she turned just in time to block the blow Ema aimed at her.

“Well,” Laxmi said. “This is interesting. I was trying to avoid a fight but I think I can handle you.” She ducked under Ema’s second blow and swiped at her side. Laxmi’s hands appeared to be empty but Ema screamed as blood spurted from her side where Laxmi had touched her.

Hannah screamed as well as sympathetic pain seared her through their bond, it was bad enough to disrupt her concentration. The scrap of ground she was maintaining crumbled in moments and she found herself falling towards the silvery mabain below.

Her scream was cut off as Alaryia dived down in her dragon form and caught her in her silvery talons. The dragon landed a little way from the fight, returned to her human form and helped Hannah sit down on a nearby rock.

“There, you’re okay and you should be out of the way here,” Alaryia said, then turned her attention to the fight with Huldre who was holding Lydia and Matthias off with effort. “He is strong – I’d best go and help.”

“I’ll be fine,” Hannah said and turned her attention to watching Ema’s confrontation with Laxmi. The Indian woman’s eyes had gone all black again and Hannah could see the faint outline of shadowy claws around her hands. They didn’t look solid, but the savage looking wound in Ema’s side suggested otherwise. As she watched, it became apparent that even with Bennu’s help Ema was on the back foot in this fight. “I’ll be fine as long as Ema is,” she corrected herself. She tried to rise and sank back down with a groan. “I wish I could help.”

“You did just fine, Hannah-alra,” Alaryia said. “I’ll make sure Ema is okay.” She smiled as Halia emerged from the bushes dragging an unconscious dragon who must be Kifarin out on the grass. “Halia, guard Hannah-alra. She’s too tired to fight.”

“Yes, mother.” Halia laid Kifarin out on the grass and sat down beside Hannah.

“Thank you.” Alaryia smiled at them again, then whirled towards the fight.

Holding together the piece of earth under their feet and keeping it hovering above the Mabain undersea while the rest of the ground shattered around them was the hardest thing Hannah had ever had to do. She gasped for breath and sank to her knees, shaking with effort, but she didn’t let the energy she was pouring into it falter. She had to keep this scrap of land high enough above the mabain that the fumes would not overcome Ema. She bit her lip and placed her hand palm down on the rock pouring even more energy into it. Sean’s fear about Kyle’s state of mind had been justified, Karen realised. A glowing gate which would either take them to the Core or allow them to speak to it here hung in a room in the centre of the tower. Kyle was standing in front of it and pouring a sustained blast of cloudy blue water at it in an attempt to breach the wards on the gate.

Stop him, the Core said in their minds. He’s a traitor like his heart friend.

“What?” Karen exclaimed as she grabbed Kyle’s arm. “Kyle, what’s going on?” Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Zilah stiffen at the Core’s words. Read the rest of this entry »

“We’re nearly there,” Rilletta said when they were roughly halfway up the stairs. “Are the people above in the shelters?”

“They are,” Rai replied. “Tonara sent me an imp once they’d sealed the wards. But if this Mitakrian is one of the first dragons, are you sure they’ll keep him out?”

“Probably not indefinitely, but long enough for our purposes,” Ystelyan said with a smile. “They aren’t as impregnable as the wards one of the thrones can make but they are pretty formidable.”

“Could you break through them?” Rai asked. Read the rest of this entry »

Jayden Emms was in a rage and panic knotted Andrew’s stomach as he forced himself to breathe. Could Emms possibly have sensed what he and Naria had been up to? What would he do if he had? Andrew swallowed and reinforced his shield as best he could. It was shaky, though, and he wasn’t certain that they couldn’t use this infernal device to get past it. Laxmi had been able to read him when she’d been tuning the device, after all, but his shield had been shot to pieces by the interference at that point.

He finished reinforcing it not a moment to soon. Emms stormed into the room and up the steps to loom over him. Read the rest of this entry »
