Next morning, they all rose late after the night’s exertions and Lydia immediately headed to the sitting room to check the news. She wasn’t surprised to find her mother sitting there already, sipping tea and staring at the television. She looked around and smiled when Lydia came in.

“Morning, Lyd,” she said. “Last night could have gone a lot worse.”

“Well, except for Tarian,” Lydia said. Read the rest of this entry »

“Sonia says her team will stay in place for a while until we’re sure it’s over but she’s not sensing any more danger tonight,” Matthias said when they returned to the school.

Lydia closed her eyes for a moment and concentrated. Her stomach felt calm now and her skin was no longer itching. “I don’t either,” she said. “I think it’s over for now.” Read the rest of this entry »

“What?” The guy who was obviously in charge looked around wildly but his eyes slid past where they were standing unseeing.

“Where? There’s no one else here.”

“They must be here,” the messenger said, holding out a tablet to the man. “They’re streaming your conversation and once again we can’t block it.”

“But…” Read the rest of this entry »

Daniel and his mother and their group jumped inside the security perimeter of the large house where the cabinet was supposed to be meeting. Sonia must have scanned the area well because she had positioned them in a small clearing within a mass of rhododendrons but he could spot the house through the branches.

Let’s be careful here, Sonia said. I know the Prime Minister was telling the truth but we can’t assume that no-one else was listening. We’d best be ready for an attack. Read the rest of this entry »

“It may not be the preparation that’s delaying them,” Peter said. “The biggest thing they’ll be waiting for is confirmation that their targets are all together. We need to find out the same thing because that tells us how long we have left to plan and how we’re going to prove what they are doing.”

Lydia was about to suggest that they’d best attack the hanger itself and record what the men were saying when the female reporter’s phone rang. The woman scowled at it before answering.

“What now!” she asked in a cold tone, then froze. “You’ve got who on the line? Are you serious?” She listened for a moment then held out the phone to Alexandra. “The Prime Minister wants to talk to you.” Read the rest of this entry »

Immediately after the interview had finished, Matthias waved Alexandra, Philip and the reporters over and told them what Lydia had seen.

“Oh God,” the female reporter exclaimed. “How deep does this rabbit hole go? A coup…” She narrowed her eyes speculatively and looked over at Peter. “This is why they sent you here, isn’t it? They know you wouldn’t go along with this and are popular enough to lead a mutiny.” Read the rest of this entry »

Lydia knew she should probably be paying attention to what the reporter was saying as they began their broadcast but instead she found herself sitting at the other side of the gym trying to chase down the sense of anxiety that was afflicting her. After a moment, she felt a hand on her arm and looked up into Fellaria’s eyes.

“What’s wrong, my ilsra?” Fellaria asked softly enough not to be picked up by the microphone.

“I’m not sure,” Lydia admitted. “Something is making me anxious but it is doesn’t feel like a premonition – well, not quite.”

“It could be your picking up something else that’s happening right now,” she said. “Show me? Maybe we can chase it down together.” Read the rest of this entry »

The soldiers had apparently got quite close to the school during the attack. There were piles of rubble where walls had been broken through and the grass in front of the school had been churned up but the main building itself seemed untouched.

When Matthias led them into the gym, Alexandra rose to her feet and extended her hands to Peter. “Welcome. I hope you don’t get into trouble for helping us.” She looked even older and more harmless than usual and had obviously done herself up to emphasize her age. Read the rest of this entry »

“Your men don’t know you’re not human, do they?” Matthias asked as they waited for Claire to arrive with the reporters.

Peter shook his head. “No one outside my family knows that. It would be a bit much for them, I think. A few of my closest staff know I have powers though. Including Jean – the one who just brought me the message about withdrawing. He wanted to know what I was going to do here because he was sure we’d be sent again and he doesn’t like the idea. He suspected I’d insisted on coming so I could talk to you as well.” He looked over his shoulder just as Sonia stiffened and looked in the same direction.

“Here they are,” he said. “And it looks like Jean is with them. It seems he had the same idea.” Read the rest of this entry »

As they waited in the shadows for Peter to finish talking to his subordinate, Lydia felt her father reach out to the unicorn who was helping them.

Is everything he said true? he asked.

Yes, everything, she replied. I like him you should help him find his heart friend.

I thought so, he said. I’m glad. And we will once the situation is a little more stable. Read the rest of this entry »
