As they waited in the shadows for Peter to finish talking to his subordinate, Lydia felt her father reach out to the unicorn who was helping them.

Is everything he said true? he asked.

Yes, everything, she replied. I like him you should help him find his heart friend.

I thought so, he said. I’m glad. And we will once the situation is a little more stable. Read the rest of this entry »

“Kids, you’re with me,” Matthias said. “Let’s go and see what he wants.” He looked over at Alexandra. “If the situation worsens, call us immediately.”

“Of course,” she said.

“Good.” He inclined his head to her then teleported the five of them to Sonia’s side. Read the rest of this entry »

Things were surprisingly quiet when the group returned to Brierthorne. Alexandra looked around as they emerged from the portal and frowned at the egg in Lyrrekka’s arms.

“That doesn’t look good,” she said. “Things went wrong?”

“Actually, other than Tarian getting shot as were were leaving, it went pretty well,” Matthias said. “We got the kids out and we’re secure. Though the latter is mostly because Lydia realised something was wrong. I’ll tell you all the details later. How are things here?” Read the rest of this entry »

Karilya crawled up to her mother and hugged her and the egg. She was weeping quietly but after a moment she stopped and frowned at the egg. “Mummy! I can still feel daddy…” She stroked her finger over the shell. “Should I be able to?”

“Wha–” Lyrrekka also stared at the egg. “You’re right. But he can’t still be self-aware in the shell…” She looked up at Estara. “Can he?”

“It does happen, but Tarian shouldn’t be strong enough… hell, even most idri aren’t strong enough.” Estara knelt down and touched the egg. After a moment her eyes blazed. “He is! Damn! What did he do?” Read the rest of this entry »

“Damn!” Sarah signalled one the dryads who’d come from Waldhafen to assist her, then ran to Tarian’s side as Lyrrekka lowered him to the floor. “This looks bad. Can you stop him frenzying?”

“I can but at the moment he’s not trying too, which is a very bad sign,” Lyrrekka said. “That’ll come once you stabilise him.” She didn’t say if, but it hung in the air all the same.

Sarah frowned for a moment then nodded. “Ah, like that dragon who saved Ian that time.” She pursed her lips and laid a hand on his wound. “Let’s see what I can do.” She closed her eyes, obviously concentrating while Lyrrekka stroked Tarian’s forehead and whispered soothingly to him. Hannah checked that the guards wouldn’t be able to break through her wall of rock any time soon before going to help the others.

As she picked up one of the girls – the one who she recognised from the news as having burned down her suburb – she noticed Lydia standing in the middle of the corridor between two of the transparent cells which now contained the scientists rather than prisoners. She was scowling and her fiery wings were twitching.

What’s wrong? Hannah asked.

Something isn’t right here, Lydia said. It shouldn’t have been this easy. Only that one woman fought back. Read the rest of this entry »

Wings were really uncomfortable, Lydia decided as they emerged into the empty room at the heart of the bunker facility where the kids were being kept. Where the silver flames emerged from her shoulders, it felt like dozens of pins were emerging from her skin.

You’ll get used to it, Fellaria said. And once we get going I imagine that you’ll soon forget about them. She turned to Matthias. We’ve jumped into the heart of the facility? Read the rest of this entry »

Andrew chewed his lip as he scanned the hills below them. Naria had managed to knock out at least half of the soldiers surrounding the school but that still left enough to cause them trouble if the attack went forward.

They’d be stupid to attack now, Naria said. They don’t know what else we’re capable of. Logic suggests they should back off and try to gather more intelligence.

It does, Kelaria said. But they should have done that in the first place. I’m not sure that their superiors are thinking logically. Read the rest of this entry »

Valeria entered the gym with the young woman who was taking her and Salia to where the non-combatants were going to hide in time to hear the discussion they were having. She reached out and laid a hand on her guide’s shoulder.

“You need a unicorn?” she asked.

“Yes,” Matthias said. “But both Dan and Lyr are needed at the rescue, so we can’t use Ebona or Kenna.”

“It’s a problem for you but not an insurmountable one,” Valeria said. “I can find a unicorn who’ll be willing to help if you’ll gate us to the Storm Palace. Several if you want but you probably only need one.” Read the rest of this entry »

What? Daniel twisted around to look down towards the hill. But he…

Oh, I don’t think he works for Xantaria, Fellaria said. Rather the opposite, actually. He feels like one of the rebels. He’s certainly been on Taloa for a very long time, anyway.

So you think he’s on our side? Andrew asked. Should we out him?

I think he probably is, she said. If he is a rebel then he certainly– She broke off as Naria interrupted. Read the rest of this entry »
