“Ah,” he said. “I see! Yes, that’s a good question. We don’t need to attract her attention until I need her distracting but we should do a trial run first. It’ll be easy enough, but I’ll have to make some preparations, and not is as good a time as any.” He summoned a small spar of metal between his hands and began to pour energy into it so he could use it as a wedge to open one of the cracks in the prison long enough to pull something through. “I’m going to organise a jailbreak. Once I let her sense it Ophelia will come to deal with whatever comes through and then it’s your turn.”

Kate gave him a very odd look. “Is this before or after she deals with whatever comes through?”

“Another good question,” he said. “That depends on who I get on this fishing expedition. There’s no way to tell. Once I see who comes out and if they have self-control I’ll tell you.” He broadcast a thought into the prison letting anyone near the crack know it was opening and continued pouring energy in as he felt something latch on, though it didn’t feel like one of the lost ones which was strange.

“So some of the prisoners you wouldn’t want loose?” she asked. “And if it’s one of them you’ll let her deal with it first.”

“Pretty much, though I hope it won’t come to that. The prison is horrible and no one should be in there.? He scowled. ?I do have some uncontrollable escapees contained somewhere more humane myself but it’s at its limit.” He looked back at the crack for a moment forming it into a portal. “So what are you going to do with your new power? Apart from helping me deal with Ophelia that is?” He lowered his hands as the portal continued to grow.

“I really don’t know,” Kate said. “I haven’t had time to think about it. It’s like wen someone gives you a whole lot of money – once you get past cool you won’t know what you’re going to do with it at first.” She swung a little faster and kicked her feet as she considered? her options. “I think I need to sort my head out first – I feel so different. I’m not sure who I am any more.”

“Define different,” he said.

“Well quite apart from the fact that for the first time in years I don’t even have a ghost of a headache right now – for the first time in years – there’s something odd…” She stopped and shuddered.

“Odd?”

“I can feel something out there,” she said. “Something malevolent that hates us for being alive.”

“Really?” He stared at her. “That sounds like the Eater of Worlds. Kaylaria always said it was real. I guess that she was right. Can you tell me more about it?”

Kate shook her head. “I don’t think I can explain.” She stopped swinging and stared into space. “You can’t sense it?”

“No, and you probably can only because you are hyper sensitive at the moment,” he said.

“I see?” she looked like she might ask more but they were interrupted by a slurping, ripping noise like the tearing of flesh from bone distracted both of them as radiant shimmering pale green light burst from the portal.

Darlryan took a step backwards in surprise. “That is not one of the Lost Ones. Who else did the bitch imprison in there?”
