Side Story 2
Hiding Place
Marian Laverne was waiting for him when Matthias stormed into her office. She looked as coldly elegant as always with her dark hair coiled atop her her head, clear blue eyes, perfect make up, grey silk business suit and crisp white blouse. Sometimes it was hard to remember that the woman was ten years his junior, but she’d been barely out of her teens when she’d been forced to take charge of her family after her parents died – two years ago. The aura of calm competence and cold determination was certainly atypical for most twenty-two year olds.
He wanted to rip the bitch’s throat out. He was holding himself together and not trying just that only because the corner of his mind which was inextricably linked to Sonia could feel her clinging to life. She was badly injured and in a lot of pain, but alive – and the kids were with her. He couldn’t lose control like poor, dead Lydia. He’d end up just as dead and wouldn’t be able to protect his wife and children. And that meant not letting her know they were alive.
He slammed his hand down hard on her antique desk and took some satisfaction as she winced at the sound of cracking veneer.
“You bitch!” he snarled. “The kids were in that car! Don’t you dare tell me you didn’t know.”
Her eyes went wide with a shock he was certain was totally feigned; her emotions were too firmly shielded for it to be genuine. “Oh, God! Matthias! I really didn’t. I am so sorry!” Fake horror dripped from her every word. “My people were meant to wait until she was alone. This shouldn’t have happened. I will see that they are disciplined for this lapse.” She gave him an equally fake sympathetc look.”And what about you? It must have been an awful shock to discover that your wife was one of them.”
He bit back another snarl and stared at her. She was trying to bait him into losing control and attacking her. He’d known she’d hated him, but not that she hated him enough to actively seek an excuse to kill him. It might even have worked if Sonia hadn’t survived.
He was about to tell her what he thought of her discipline when he sense another vortex of grief and rage storming towards Marian’s office. It was Sarah, of course. Obviously she couldn’t sense her sister still clinging to life and, much as he could use her healing expertise here, he didn’t dare tell her. If he was going to keep Sonia both alive and on Earth, no one must know until he’d figured out how to deal with the Lavernes properly. But he still had to stop Sarah getting herself killed. She was his friend and even if she weren’t Sonia would never forgive him if he let her sister get killed – especially since Sarah was seven months pregnant. But first he had to get her attention.
He wrapped up all his anger and misery – and he had enough of both about the situation even though Sonia was still alive- into a mental dart and shot it at her. He felt her rock back on her heels and pause just outside the doors.
Matt?
Pull yourself together, Sal. She’ll kill you if you attack her.
I- We could take her together, she said but he knew he’d got through to her.
If she was alone. She’s not. He showed her the hidden guards he had scanned out. Dealing with the Lavernes is a long term thing. Even if we did manage to kill her, the rest of her family would carry on.
You… you’re right.
Snarl at her, Sal. But don’t attack her. He gave Marian Laverne one last cold stare. “We’ll talk about this again, Marian, when my emotions aren’t so raw.” He turned and stalked out, nodding to Sarah as he did. As walked down the corridor he heard the torrent of verbal abuse she unleashed on Laverne. It almost made him smile.
He drove back home and waited, scanning the area until he was sure no one was observing him – physically or psychically – before teleporting to his wife’s side.

You are so good! Thanks, a lot!
In “I- We could take her together, she said but he knew he’d got through to her.”
I think “she said” should not be italic.
I’ll be watching these, too, I guess.
Thanks for sharing.
Whoops! Thanks for the spot!
