Part Five
Karen poked her head around the door of Sarah Tyler’s room and cleared her throat. “Aunt Sarah?” She hesitated and then added. “I can call you Aunt Sarah, can’t I?”
“Of course you can, Karen.” Sarah looked up from where she was sitting by Mela’s bed. She looked pale and tired. She must have been draining her reserves to support the mergirl. “What is it?”
“Could I have a word?”
“Of course, but do you mind doing it here? I don’t want to leave Mela unsupervised.”
“Yes, of course.” Karen stepped fully into the room. “How is she?” Read the rest of this entry »

Part Four
Yemi was dangling her legs in the pool and watching the glowing fish dart around lighting the depths when Kyle and Darya rejoined her. Malisia was sitting by her and they were talking quietly.
Kyle cleared his throat to get their attention and both girls looked around at them. Read the rest of this entry »

Part Three
Mela woke to find Ishleen and Ebona just finishing a large plate of meat. The nightmare looked up at her and flapped her leathery wings slightly.
“Good afternoon, sleepyhead,” she said. “You must really have tired yourself out taking that shield down. Even Matt and Daniel woke up before you and I’m sure you know how late they tend to sleep.” She nuzzled Mela kindly. “How are you feeling now?” Read the rest of this entry »

Part Two
Ystelyan really was worried, Kyle realised when they entered the throneroom. He was pacing up and down in front of his throne and scowling. It was the first time he’d seen the dragon look anything approaching tense. Ystelyan looked up as Talira closed the doors.
“Are you feeling better, Yemi?” Ystelyan managed to muster a smile but it looked like an effort.
Yemi immediately scooted behind Darya and made a whimpering noise. After a moment she swallowed audibly, peeked over Darya’s shoulder and nodded.

Chapter Fourteen
Part One
“Are you sure it’s Yemi?” Darya asked. He sounded so upset that Kyle wanted to hug him.
“Yes. She was in the last group of uncircleted combatants that were bought in,” Talira replied. “And her mind was pretty messed up. She must have fought them pretty hard when they were controlling her. Ystelyan-mirian had to step in himself to put her back together. She hasn’t stopped crying since she woke up and he got the impression she was a friend of yours. He hopes you can snap her out of it before he sends her and the other innocent ones to Waldhafen.” Read the rest of this entry »

Part Eleven
“Will you let me have a look, honey?” Lucas knelt down beside the pool after Mela had described her dream. “I promise that I won’t hurt you.”
Mela gulped at the thought of someone prodding around in her head, but nodded weakly.
He closed his eyes for a moment and then gave a puzzled frown. “Then let me in,” he said.
“I… how…”
“Just relax, Mela,” Aunt Lori said. “All that tension will be making it hard for him to read you.”
“Well, it’s more her shield that’s the problem,” Lucas said mildly. Read the rest of this entry »

Part Ten
Mela woke with a start in the middle of the night to find that neither Daniel nor Ebona was there. Her stomach clenched in anxiety before she noticed Nephele sitting in one of the chairs, reading. She sat up in the pool, splashing the water slightly as she did.
The sylph looked up at the sound and smiled at her. “Sonia and Matthias went to talk to the River Singer and wanted Ebona along to gauge her truthfulness, so she asked me to keep an eye on you while they were gone. Though I can’t the Red Dragons trying something when there’s so many gathered here who can fight them.” Read the rest of this entry »

Daniel frowned as he watched Andrew head for his room, then turned to where his father was kneeling beside his mother.
“You should go to sleep as well, Sonia,” Matthias suggested. “You’re still recovering.”
She just shook her head. “We’ll sleep late anyway, since neither you nor Dan will be up before noon. So now might be a good time to have that conversation with the River Singer, if Ebona is willing.” She cast a questioning look at Daniel. Read the rest of this entry »

Part Eight
“Well, that confirms what Daniel told us,” Matthias said as Andrew finished relaying his tale. “Emms is building something to help him usurp me, and he intends to use it against Earth.” He scowled at the ceiling. “And how typical of him to make it a throne – suits his damned personality perfectly.”
“Why do you work with him at all?” Daniel asked from the corner. He was the only one of the other three there. Andrew guessed Karen and Lydia had gone to bed. “It’s obvious you know what he’s like. You should have stopped him.” Borderline hostility had crept back into his brother’s tone. Read the rest of this entry »

Part Seven
Andrew still felt dizzy as he emerged through the gate into a quiet section of the forest. Jayden had insisted on placing blocks on him and Kimi to stop them talking – or even thinking in public – about what they’d seen, especially since the excuse they’d come up with for his absence was pretty anaemic. He’d said that when he was talking about where he’d been he’d believe it, since that was the only way to fool Ebona and Shadavar. Worse, that strange throne thing had left Andrew with a killer headache. From the way Kimi’s ears and tail were drooping, she felt ill as well. Hopefully they could get help in Waldhafen without having to explain why they needed it. He knelt down and gave his heart friend a quick, reassuring hug, took a breath, got his bearings and headed back towards the town. Read the rest of this entry »
