Sonia knelt down by Yedan and smiled gently. “If you’re sure,” she said. “But we’ll need to find somewhere for you to stay until I’ve made a pocket for you on Earth. I don’t want you getting sick.”

“He can stay here, if he wants,” Alaryia said.

“I’d be grateful, Alaryia-miria.” He turned back to Sonia. “Do you want me to swear now?” Read the rest of this entry »

“We have to go back,” Matthias said once he’d absorbed the message. “I forgot to hand the wards over to James and we have a visitor.”

“What sort of visitor?” Sonia asked sharply.

“Nothing bad,” he said. “At least I don’t think so. She says she wants to help stop the government finding out about us, but at the same time she says she’s working for them.” Read the rest of this entry »

After he finished eating, Rantalyan sat back on his heels and looked around at them again.

“How much do you know of what Xantaria is planning?” he asked.

Should we trust him? Lydia asked. It could all be an elaborate trick to find out what we know.

It could, Sonia agreed. But I don’t think so, and we do need to know what he knows. She turned to Rantalyan and spoke aloud. “Only a little. We were sent a warning that she intends to invade Earth and another prisoner we interrogated said she intends to either drag Earth to another universe or encase it in a huge bubble, but we have no idea where she intends to get the energy. Do you know?” Read the rest of this entry »

After the Storm Palace was safe and Matthias, Sonia and their group had gone with Alaryia to question the prisoner, Hannah and the rest of Sarah’s group also took their leave and returned to Earth. They had no sooner emerged from the portal than James came rushing up to Sarah.

“Sarah! Is Matt with you?” He looked around anxiously. “He isn’t? We need him back soon! Someone just rang the main gate buzzer and I don’t recognise them.”

“Someone?” she asked. “Someone human?”

“I think so, yes,” he said. “They’re definitely an Astral too, but a wild one, I think. They don’t feel like any of the families. I’d go answer it but with our wards in lockdown…” He trailed off. “Well what’s the use if I can’t let them in even if I want to.”

“But you’re Matthias’s second, aren’t you?” Hannah blurted. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt.”

“It’s okay,” he said. “And yes I am, but he forgot to hand them over to me before he rushed off. I didn’t even realise until the bell rang.”

“Typical.” Sarah rolled her eyes. “Get him to tune you in all the time. I did that with Lucas after I did the same thing several times. Now let’s see who it is and if we want to admit them or not. Then either way, send a message to Matt.”

“That’s a good idea,” he said. “Sorry I was flipping out when you arrived back, I think this whole mess is getting to me.”

“You do look tired,” Sarah said. “Have you been sleeping?”

He shook his head. “Too much to organise.”

“Bloody Morgans,” Sarah muttered. “You’re all the same. If you don’t sleep you’ll be good for nothing.” She reached out and touched her fingertips to his temple. “Hmm, good, it is just tiredness. With that damned bug going around we can’t be too careful.”

“I’ll be fine,” he said. “Let’s go see who our visitor is.”

***

Just outside the gate, a woman in a tailored dark grey business suit stood leaning against an expensive-looking metallic blue sports car, talking on her phone.

The car’s second hand, James said. I can feel at least two previous owners even from here.

Interesting. And that suit is homemade rather than designer, Sarah said. Well finished and well fitted, but still… Let’s see who she is.

The woman looked up as the gate opened, said something into her phone and put it away before turning to face them. Her eyes were a light blue that seemed incongruous against her rich dark skin. For a moment Hannah wondered if she was wearing contacts but they looked normal, just oddly coloured.

It’s unusual but it happens, James said before speaking aloud. “Can we help you, madam?”

She favoured him with a long look before responding. “Possibly, but it’s even more likely that I can help you. Is your brother at home, Mr Morgan?”

James stared at her then shook his head. “He’ll be back shortly. We can send him a message if you want, madam.”

“Sophie Ashbourne.” She offered him her hand. “And please do. We need to discuss how we’re going to stop my employers finding out about you.”

“Your employers?” he asked. She just tilted her head at him and his eyes widened. “You work for the Government?”

“Not officially, but yes. I’d rather not explain more than once, though. So could you please call your brother?”

“Yes,” he said. “I think I’d better.”

Lydia’s stomach twisted in sympathy as the dragon screamed and fell back to the floor, convulsing. Much to her surprise, she found she understood most of his yelling, in draconic, at someone to let him go – presumably Mitakrian. She suspected much of the rest was swearing. The dragon Lydia had captured was still unconscious as they secured him in a special cell in Alaryia’s dungeons and bound him with restraints made of goblin silk. The other prisoners had been confined elsewhere and they weren’t restrained the same way, because according to Alaryia the others were not a frenzy risk.

“Will the ropes stop him frenzying, then?” Lydia asked. Read the rest of this entry »

Valeria’s mouth hung open as she watched the life returning to the area around her palace. The grass and shrubs – which had looked shriveled, brown and dead after Mitakrian’s troops had drained them – were plumping up and turning green and vibrant as Halia, Naria and most of the other dragons circled around in their energy forms, weaving together in a glowing, multi-coloured plait.

“That’s … unexpected,” Sonia said before Valeria could voice her own surprise. “I never knew dragons could do that.” She looked over at Alaryia and Lyrrekka. Read the rest of this entry »

“I don’t think my dungeons are suitable for holding dragons,” Valeria said without preamble when they arrived at the storm palace. “So what are you going to do with the prisoners?”

“I’ll take them if you want,” Alaryia said. “I do have the facilties to deal with prisoners and we can’t allow them to return to Mitakrian. Not when we’ve dealt his forces such a blow.” She paused and nodded at the still unconscious dragon that Lydia and Halia were dragging between them. “Except for that one. There’s something odd about him. I swear Mitakrian actually considered rescuing him and that’s well out of character. We need to question him.” Read the rest of this entry »

Daniel clung to Kelaria’s neck as they flew back towards where Sonia was fighting with Mitakrian.

Do we have a plan?

Sort of, Matthias replied. As soon as we’re in range, we hit him with everything.

Yes, but try not to kill him, Kelaria said. He hasn’t got a contingency in place and the one thing worse than having him holding the black mirite would be having no one in the position. Read the rest of this entry »

Lydia closed her eyes and reached for her father and siblings. Even at a distance their minds flowed into each other easily, enabling them to form a mental net around their target. Once the fusion was complete, they turned their attention on the dragons.

Land and sleep!

There were several surprised bellows and all but one of the dragons began curving down towards the ground, though several were struggling not to. They flapped, rising a little before dropping down further as they fought the command. Read the rest of this entry »
