Chapter Eighteen

Part Five

Karen wasn’t surprised when Salia scrambled down from Ebona’s back without waiting for help and all but flew to Valeria.

“Mummy!”

“Salia!” Valeria swept her into a hug and smiled at Karilya, who had hesitantly followed her over. “And you must be Karilya. Salia has talked about you a lot in her imps. It’s nice to meet you at last.” Read the rest of this entry »

Dariad winced as they emerged from the portal. There was a subtle silvery glow permeating everything in the mountain valley. It wasn’t bright enough for this to be a true light affinity zone but it was enough to make a svart alf like him wince and squint. He glanced at Matthias and saw that he was cringing as well. Two Years Ago

Hannah Four

Hannah ignored the boy’s ultimatum as she extended her mind in to the rock beneath her feet. Without taking her eyes off him and the dragon, she carefully drew herself a mental map to search for escape routes. At first she sensed nothing useful. Then, as if a fog were clearing, she felt a path down the opposite side of the mountain which she would have sworn wasn’t there a moment ago. Something reached out from the rock and touched her mind.

Get moving, Earth Warrior. I will distract him until you reach me. The red one must not get the key. Destroy it if you have to.

Who are you? she asked as she cast a pile of rock shards at boy and dragon to distract him before racing towards the path. Behind her, she heard the dragon scream and the boy give an angry yell as her attack pierced his hastily erected shield and sliced into both of them.

Ah, yes, you wouldn’t know. I am the Earth Guardian, he replied. Once you reach my shrine, I’ll be able to keep you safe until rescue comes. I doubt the red one will want to keep too many troops around here for long, anyway. It’s too close to silver territory.

Well that explained the massive rock in the middle of a fire zone, Hannah thought. She glanced back to see that the boy had leapt off the dragon’s back and the dragon had taken human form. The two were talking earnestly. The dragon had a stressed and pained look on his face and his fingertips were showing claws.

Hmm. If you choose to attack that dragon again, be sure you can take it out in one shot. He’s on the verge of frenzy; one more wound could tip him over.

And then we’d be screwed, Hannah agreed. Matthias and Sarah had shown them the damage a frenzying dragon could do when they’d first been called. I probably can’t, so I’d better concentrate on the boy if I have to fight. I hope I don’t.

Indeed. I’ll close the path behind you and give you some shelter from the above. He gave a deep sigh in her mind.  I wish that the Core wouldn’t do this. You shouldn’t be placed in combat without preparation and at least your heart friend to help.

It doesn’t understand that, I guess, she said as she continued down the path. She glanced back again and saw that it was vanishing behind her, replaced by impassable boulders and cracks. Spines of rock were reaching out of the ground and spiking into the air above her, giving some shelter from the dragon – although so far, she saw no sign of him or the boy. She didn’t like that but she couldn’t afford to stop and find them. Instead, she just put her head down and kept running.

Watch out! The Guardian’s shout gave her just enough warn to slide to a halt as a huge fireball flew past her and hit the path directly in front of her, opening a chasm she would never be able to leap.

“Now, give me the key,” the boy said. She turned and found him standing on top of one of the boulders. There was a flapping sound and the dragon landed on the other side of the chasm.

You’re close now. I need you to trust me. Jump.

What? Hannah was sure her shocked confusion showed on her face.

Just jump into the chasm. I’ll catch you.

Err… Hannah stared into the chasm, she could see lava at the bottom.

“Give Logan the key or I’ll make sure you scream for days before you die,” the dragon said. “Cooperate and I’ll make it painless.”

“Lishian!” The boy snapped. “What sort of a bargain is that?”

“It’s not your call, Logan. Gerian-mirian wants her dead. She knows about the key and we can’t let them learn of it.”

Hannah snorted softly to herself. “Way to make my decision easy!” she said. “If I’m going to die anyway, I have no reason not to try the route I might survive.” She closed her eyes and leapt.

Chapter Eighteen

Part Three

Matthias and Sonia were preparing to leave with Halia and Tarian. The two of them were being determinedly businesslike, but Valeria could tell how worried they were. Even if her mother hadn’t been able to feel it dripping off them, Valeria would have known it from the tension in their shoulders and the occasional looks and touches they exchanged as they gathered their things.

Kyle and Darya had accompanied them back to the treehouse. Kyle was sitting in the corner with his head on his arms, and Darya had one hand on his shoulder, murmuring softly to him. Valeria suspected he’d been crying. She didn’t blame him; she couldn’t even imagine how she’d feel in his situation.

“I want to go with you,” Kyle said suddenly. “I need-” He broke off as Matthias shook his head.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” he said.

“Why not? She’s my mother! I have two younger sisters. They should be told…” He trailed off.

“Yes, they should,” Matthias agreed. “But I think you should wait until after that. Both of you need time to adapt. I think I should have her friend here explain to her. But speaking of your sisters, there’s something bothering me. She supposedly died fourteen years ago. How can she have a goblin daughter that age?”

“You mean Mia?” Tarian asked. “When Lyr escaped into Gerian’s territory she was helping a badly injured fire haltia woman and her goblin toddler. The woman didn’t make it and Lyr insisting on adopting Mia.”

“Ah,” Matthias said.

“Okay, I’ll stay here. Poor mother though, she must have been remade twice in less than a year.” Kyle shuddered violently.

“I just wish she’d told us,” Matthias said. “We would have given her a chance and it would have been useful to know.”

“It wouldn’t have been possible,” Halia said softly. “The kithreiri have a strict ban on any contact of Taloa. It’s not always well enforced, but they do keep a close eye on any new remade. Not that there are many.”

“And once she was captured by Shalriya-miria and remade again, she had to keep her former identity secret.” Tarian added. “There’s no way she’d have tolerated her existence, not when she caused her so much trouble when she was human.”

“Especially since she’s an ida,” Halia said. “Shalriya is terrified of being challenged. She’s lucky she managed to conceal her strength. It would have made her origins obvious.”

“Why?” Sonia looked up from where she was packing a bag.

“Born Kithreiri and Kinstrari can’t achieve idri level,” Halia said. “Those with the potential go insane at maturity if they don’t have some of their energy permanently removed. Mother thinks it’s because we don’t have a heart friend-”

“Okay, I think we’re ready,” Sonia interrupted.

“Yes,” Matthias agreed. “Coming, Val?”

“Of course!” Valeria tried to conceal her excitement at seeing Salia again. It seemed wrong in the face of what had happened to Andrew.

“You’re allowed to happy that your kids are okay, Val.” Matthias squeezed her shoulder.

“B-but the price. I’m so sorry!”

“I think that would have happened anyway,” he said. “It was just bad timing. Anyway, come on. Salia needs you.”

“I’m coming too!” Dariad stood in the doorway with his own bag slung over his shoulder. “I need to talk to Alaryia.”

Matthias stared at him for a moment then nodded. “Very well.” He looked over at Halia. “Would you?”

“Of course, Matthias-idan.” She opened a gate and ushered them through.

The rest of the journey passed in a blur of worry for Lydia and the others.  Caoilainn was riding behind Jason to keep him upright on Kenna’s back. Ilona had exchanged a surprising flurry of imps with Alaryia and seemed pensive. As they approached the valley that marked the border she called a pause to check on Jason and make sure he stayed stable.

“We’ll be at the border soon,” Ilona said as they got the still-unconscious boy back on to Kenna’s back. “We shouldn’t have any trouble crossing. Gerian knows we’re more than a match for anything he could send. Al says she’s granted your parents safe passage to come and meet you. They’re pretty frantic.” She turned to look at Lyrrekka who talking quietly with Kenna. “Your friend surrendered at Waldhafen. They’re bringing him with them. I think something else is going on because Al’s being unusually coy. But I should probably warn you that they know.”

“I’m not surprised.” Lyrrekka patted Kenna’s neck.

“What do they know?” Karen asked sharply.

“Ah,” Lyrrekka said. “I think it might be better coming from them than me.”

“Is mother coming as well?” Alban asked as they resumed walking.

“Yes, she is,” Ilona said.

“Mummy’s coming?” Salia looked up at that. Her cheeks were still wet with tears.

“I’m looking forward to meeting your mother,” Karilya said where she sat behind Salia on Ebona’s back. Her shoulder’s slumped slightly. “I hope she likes me even though I’m a dragon.”

“I’m sure she will,” Karen said. “She knows how nice you’ve been to Salia and you’re a cute little button who no one could dislike.” She sighed heavily. “Please don’t grow up in to the sort of monster so many of your kind are.”

Karilya looked at her solemnly then nodded. “I won’t. I promise.” They crested the hill into the valley and her eyes widened. “Mummy, I can feel someone else in the ground.”

“That will be Alaryia-miria,” Lyrrekka said. “We’re in the borderlands now. We’ll be there soon.” She chewed on her lip. “This is going to be interesting.”

Valeria swallowed anxiously as she watched Matthias pacing while he waited for Halia.

“I’m sure Salia and Alban are alright.” Sonia squeezed her hand. “Neither of us get sense that the other three are in danger, just Andrew. If Karen’s okay, Alban is, and if Salia’s with with them she’s okay too.”

Two Years Ago

Hannah Three

It really ought to be dark, Hannah realised as she started down the tunnel. Especially since she’d sealed the entrance. But such was the strength of the fire essence flowing through the rocks that they were glowing red-hot. She could hold most of the heat at bay, but as she made her way deeper in to the tunnels she began to sweat profusely, her jeans and blouse sticking to her skin. Her fire affinity wasn’t enough against such intensity. She wouldn’t be able to stay in here for long. She needed to find the thing and come up with a plan to get out again without being caught as quickly as possible. Read the rest of this entry »

Chapter Eighteen

Part One

(Whoops! I initially posted this installment instead of the correct one on Friday. This is the correct one. So if you’re looking at this and feeling deja vu hit the previous link and see what you missed due to my mishap. Sorry about that).

Karen stared at the mess the rendezvous point was in. Shattered rock was everywhere and the packs had been scattered over the whole clearing. Even though she was expecting it, her stomach still lurched when she saw no sign of Andrew.

Caoilainn was on her knees  by Jason while Salia and Coromel were sobbing and clinging to Mia. The goblin was sitting on the remains of a shattered rock, feeding one of her meat rolls to Ebona. Kenna trotted over  and the two unicorns exchanged formal greetings while Salia flung herself at Alban with a wail.

Karen hurried over to Caoilainn and knelt beside her. The banshee looked up at her with a worried expression.

“I think Jason’s okay, just unconscious,” she said. “But Emms took Andrew and Kimi. I think he would have killed the two of us if Ebona and the goblin girl hadn’t intervened.” She shuddered . “We tried to stop him, but he was too strong for us. What are we going to tell Sonia and Matthias?”

“Just that. It’s not your fault.” Karen swallowed her sick worry for her brother as Jason stirred. She needed to concentrate on the person she could help here and now.  Glancing behind her, she saw Daniel pacing up and down while Lydia chewed on her nails fretfully. Karen racked her brain for distracting tasks to give them but was distracted when a groan from Jason drew her attention back to him.

“Hnn.” He tried to sit up before they could stop him and promptly threw up in Karen’s lap. She cringed internally but forced herself to murmur soothingly and stroke his hair. When he’d finished, he lay back down with a groan and a murmured apology.

“Not your fault,” she said again, then looked over at the unicorns. “I think he’s concussed.”

“It certainly looks like it.” Ebona walked over and placed the tip of her horn against the cut on the side of his head. It closed and faded, but the bruise forming around it remained unaffected. After a moment, Ebona raised her head. “There’s a deeper injury here than I can fix fully. What about you, sister?” She looked over at Kenna.

“Let me see.” Kenna trotted over followed by Lyrrekka and also touched the tip of her horn to the injury, then sighed. “No, it’s beyond my skill. He needs true healer, and soon. The best we can do is keep the swelling down and stop the bleeding until we get him to one.”

“Hey, that’s important. It’ll keep him alive and not brain damaged, at least,” Lyrrekka said.

“Brain damage doesn’t sound good,” Jason mumbled, his eyes fluttering shut. Karen sent her own moderate healing ability into the wound, then sighed in relief. There was a crack but the two unicorns had treated the injury in time to prevent the swelling from making it worse.

“They’re right, there’s no damage yet. Which is good for you because it means we can let you sleep.” She hesitated. “Except how are we going to move him if he’s sleeping?”

“That’s easy,” Lyrrekka said. “We’ll tie him on to Kenna and have someone ride with him to keep him upright. The girls can ride Ebona.” She looked at the small pile of packs. “I think we can manage those between us.”

Jason’s eyes flickered open. “Kenna? I’ve heard that name before.” He frowned for a moment. “I don’t remember where.”

“Worry about it later,” Caoilainn said. “Let’s get to safety first.”

“Yes, let’s.” Ilona released an imp. “I’ve sent a message to Ala asking her to have a healer meet us at the border.”

“Hmm, yes,” Lyrrekka said. “One of you should send a message to Matthias as well. Tell him what happened.”

“What?” Karen stared at her.

“Well, surely your father knows that something is wrong. He must be worried sick.”

“How… how did you know who our father was? No one is supposed to know that!” Karen exclaimed.

“But you’re the Morgan qua-” Lyrrekka broke off. “Something happened after-” She broke off and shook her head. “Nevermind. He hid you? Only he would try that. My point stands, though; one of you needs to send him a message while the rest of us get everything ready to move out.”

“After what?” Karen glared at Lyrrekka, but the dragon woman seemed in no hurry to elaborate. After a moment, she sighed in defeat. “I’ll do it.”

“You’d better change those trousers, as well.” Lydia tossed a clean pair of khaki trousers at her from one of the packs, followed by an empty bag. “Wrap the dirty ones in that so the sick doesn’t get all over everything.”

“Good idea.” Karen picked them up and ducked behind a rock to change. Then she wrapped up everything which had happened – including Lyrrekka’s inexplicable knowledge – into an imp and sent it flying to her father.

Gerian seemed stunned to find himself facing three humans and four speakers. Lyrrekka seemed equally surprised, though after a moment a look of comprehension flitted across her face.

His eyes focused on Ilona. “You!”

“Me!” she agreed and sent a bolt of dazzlingly bright rainbow light at him. Karen couldn’t help gasping as he staggered back several paces. The irisad was bloody strong! Read the rest of this entry »

Hannah Two

Hannah cautiously made her way through the flames. The fire made it almost impossible to see where she was going and there was little rock or soil for her to extend her earth affinity through. Her tertiary fire affinity was barely enough to keep the flames from burning her, so even that couldn’t help her. Whatever danger was here might well be on top of her before she was aware of it.

A scream from just ahead caught her attention; that must be why she was here. She paused and was trying to work out which direction it came from when she heard another one She set off towards it, scurrying from tree to fiery tree until she came to a clearing. Read the rest of this entry »

Andrew was only vaguely aware that the others had left. He was only vaguely aware of everything except for the voice pulling at him, telling him it was time. Part of him desperately wanted to go to them but Kimi was also in his head, yelling at him to ignore it. And the alarms his mother had set in her wards were screaming too. It wasn’t a good sign. He decided to follow his instincts and stay put, but resisting was making him feel dizzy and ill.
