Chapter Three
Part Five

Korrig didn’t even look up at Lydia’s question, let alone answer it. She tapped her foot impatiently but he didn’t seem to have heard her. After a few moments, she reached out and tapped his shoulder. As she did, the impression of an intense mental conflict overwhelmed her and she jerked back. He finally looked up at her and even though he’d attacked them, she couldn’t help wincing at the misery in his eyes.

Lydia shook her head. Never mind sympathy, they needed to get to the bottom of this.

“Where’s the honour in keeping an oath in word but not spirit?” she asked.  “True you didn’t exactly lie to us, but it was still a underhanded trick.” Read the rest of this entry »

Chapter Three
Part Four

While Andrew was busy inside the cave, Lydia had reached the exit. When she reached the cliff edge she could see Bennu dodging shards of stone being shot at him by Korrig. She hissed angrily at his betrayal – they’d trusted him! – and climbed onto a nearby ice boulder for a better view down the cliff. Her fury stoked a fire inside her which she grabbed hold of instinctively. Fiery light broke from beneath her skin, spreading down her sword. The blade burst into spectral flames as Bennu soared further into the sky, glowing and transforming into his phoenix form.

Korrig’s took a step backwards, his face crinkled in confusion. He recovered quickly and summoned a protective wall of earth as the phoenix shot a fireball at him, but it was too slow. He screamed in pain as the fireball struck him in the shoulder. Read the rest of this entry »

Part Three

“Kimi, can you transform now?” Andrew asked as they ran.

“I think so,” Kimi replied. “Concentrate and let’s see.” He did as she asked and she began to glow and grew into the horse-sized arctic gryphon she’d been when he met her.

“It’s a good thing this is a big cave,” he said.

She gave a low growling laugh. “Yes,” she agreed. “It is. Climb on – four legs are faster than two.”

He scrambled onto her back and she bounded after the spiders. The chase led them to a smaller cavern where the spiders had their nest. Read the rest of this entry »

Chapter Three
Part Two

The cavern was a tunnel of transparent blue ice filled with an eerie glow where sunlight refracted down from above. Andrew’s dizziness redoubled as they entered and he reached out and grabbed onto a crack in the wall with his bare hand to keep from falling.

“It’s warm!” Surprise overcame dizziness and he managed to stand properly.

“You’re joking right?” Lydia moaned. “I wish I’d stayed outside with Bennu.”

“No.” Andrew turned and stared at her in surprise. Complaining was so unlike her. “I like it here.”

“It’s beautiful,” Kimi said. “It’s the most perfect den I’ve ever seen. I could nest here very happily.”

“It is, isn’t it,” Andrew agreed.

“It’s pretty enough,” Lydia said. “But the cold is seeping into my bones and making me ache.”

“Eh, it’s not that bad,” Karen said. “It is a bit chilly, and I’d say perfect was too extravagant a word. But it’s quite pleasant.”

“You don’t like it because you’re the flame warrior,” Kimi said. “It’s the nature of the cold to leech heat away. That’s why Bennu wanted to stay outside.”

Lydia looked at Kimi for a moment and then swore. “Why didn’t I think of that?” she growled. She stalked over to where Andrew was still holding into the wall and hugged him. Warmth flowed into him and he managed to let go of the wall without falling.

“What the heck?” he said

“Is that better?” she asked through chattering teeth.

“A bit, thank you.” He noticed she was shivering. “Are you okay, Lyd? What did you do?”

“I-I’ll be o-okay,” she said. “Just hurry up and find the damned bracelet. I can’t do that too often.” She pulled a disposable space blanket from her backpack and tried to open it with shaking fingers.

After watching her fumble with it unsuccessfully, Karen took it off her, opened it up and helped her drape the silver foil round her shoulders.

“T-thanks.” Lydia huddled into the blanket. “That probably wouldn’t have hit me so badly elsewhere. I wish I’d known I could do that before. It would have made Drew feel better.”

“Don’t make yourself ill on my account.” Andrew said and then gestured with his head. “We’re nearly there – I can feel it. Come on!” He turned and led them further into the cave.

They entered a domed chamber where steps carved into the floor of the cave led down into the depths of the ice.

“Down there,” Andrew said. He started towards them, then stopped as a voice resounded in his mind.

Lydia! Help me!

“Bennu?” Lydia whispered.

Andrew turned and looked at her, she was staring back towards the entrance. She must have heard it too. He looked at Karen and saw she’d gone white.

“Lyd?” he asked.

“Bennu needs me!” she said. “Something’s wrong.” She started back towards the entrance. “You two find the bracelet. I’m going to help Bennu, he can’t transform without me.”

Andrew grabbed her wrist. “Are you sure he can transform at all with you weakened by helping me?”

Lydia frowned for a moment and then nodded. “I’ve got enough energy for that. Be quick though – I think we’ll need-”  She broke off as Bennu’s voice reached them again. “I have to go!”

“Be careful,” Andrew called after her and turned to Karen. “Are you coming with me?”

“It’s not like I’d be much use out there,” she said and the headed down the steps together.

***

Was this singing in his blood what Lydia had felt when she got close to her bracelet? It must be. No wonder she’d been so determined to get into the Flame Palace, This was more insistent than the mermaids’ song. After this, he doubted their song would affect him again.  He fought his returning exhaustion and quickened his pace. He wanted to reach the items he could feel calling him, and if Lydia was anything to go by they would fix this.

“Do you think Lyd’s okay?” Karen asked. “Who knows what made Bennu call for her.”

“She will be,” he replied. “It’s not like we’d be much use. Kimi daren’t transform until I find my bracelet, and you haven’t even met your heart friend yet.”

“No.” Karen frowned. “Kimi and Bennu both turned up near the Gate. Mine didn’t, and I think it’s because he couldn’t. And I’ve been having dreams since we got here about him calling for me.”

“You mentioned that,” Andrew said. “What do you think, Kimi?”

“I’ve been wondering where Karen’s heart friend is,” she conceded. “It’s not impossible he’s been captured.” The leopard looked like she might say more, but then her fur stood on end and she yelped, “Ice Spiders! Run!”

Andrew glanced back and saw a hoard transparent spiders the size of labradors scuttling towards them. Adrenaline took over and he fled as fast as he could. As he ran he could hear Karen pounding along behind him.

They rounded a corner and  found a dais carved into the ice. A pair of knives which looked like they were made of ice and a silvery bracelet, similar to Lydia’s and set with a sapphire lay on it. As held out his hands and began to glow with a pale blue light he heard Karen shriek behind him.

The bracelet and knives flew to him, but he was too busy turning in time to see Karen being dragged away by the spiders. Her shoulder was bleeding and he he could see a thin rime of frost spreading out from the wound. That couldn’t be good.

He was about to give chase when something bumped against his hand. He looked down and saw the bracelet and knives hovering there. He paused long enough to place the bracelet on his wrist and stick the knives in his belt, then he took off after the spiders.

Chapter Three

Part One

Two nights later, Andrew lay awake watching the snow fall. It had started about noon and Korrig had said it was a sign they were getting close to his bracelet. Andrew knew that, anyway.

His sisters and Korrig were curled up in the cart trying to keep warm, but he found it too warm and had left to lie outside. He still couldn’t sleep, despite his exhaustion. He’d complained to Kimi – who was also awake – about it, but she’d just shrugged and said it was his affinity; of course he couldn’t sleep, before she padded off to go hunting.

So he lay there, watching the snowflakes drifting down around him in the green light of the moon. Read the rest of this entry »

Chapter Two

VI

“But what if they get there first?” The Rider was staring off into the distance as he picked at his food.

“Then they get it first,” Ebona said. “It’s not a disaster. You can take it later if necessary.”

“If no one else takes it first.” He sounded bitter. “Don’t they know they’re being used?”

“I’m sure they do, but they don’t know by whom,” Ebona said, “I remember someone else who was pretty naive about that a few months ago. Two someones, actually.” Read the rest of this entry »

Chapter Two

V

?Are we going the right way?? Lydia asked Andrew quietly a couple of hours after they had set off.

Andrew opened his eyes and looked at her. ?Hmm?? He seemed to think about it. ?Roughly? it?s a little more that way.? He gestured to the right. ?But I think that?s because the road winds so much. It was a little more that way earlier.? He pointed to the left.

?My people made your bracelets, you know.? Korrig said suddenly from where he sat up front.

?Really?? Lydia asked.

Chapter Two
IV

Mela?s first warning was when she started coughing. After the initial spasm passed, she slumped back against the Rider with a sob as Ebona picked her way carefully through the roots and fallen trunks of trees of the overgrown wood. Her head was aching fiercely, which was not a good sign. She closed her eyes and imagined swimming in a cool forest pool, but it didn?t help. How long until her skin cracked and developed sores from being out of the water too long? She groaned and another coughing fit took her. When she recovered, the Rider had removed one of his leather gloves and was holding the back of his hand against her forehead. She looked up at him and almost thought she saw concern in his eyes. Chapter Two

III

They headed back upstream and waited while Lydia cleaned the dishes and refilled the canteens. Even without the danger of attack, none of them wanted to be alone. Who knew what was out there?

Lydia was just filling the final canteen when her currently adrenaline-hyped psychic sense went off. She drew the sword she?d received the previous day and looked around.

Bennu flew up to hover over her protectively. Kimi turned in the same direction with her fur standing on end, lips curled back from her teeth in a snarl.

?How are you feeling?? Lydia asked when Andrew woke.

?Tired. Is it time to get up already?? He groaned when she nodded.

?I?m afraid so. I?m fixing breakfast as best I can. It?ll be the remains of the stew with biscuits and fruit.?

?It?ll do,? he said. ?I just hope I can keep up today.? Read the rest of this entry »
