Chapter Twenty Three

Part Four

From the way Estara was pacing her audience chamber when they arrived Kyle guessed she was already aware of much of what was happening. She looked up and gave them a strained smile as they emerged from the portal. When she spotted Ian, she gave him a curious look before turning to her sister.

Alaryia introduced her and Ian before explaining what had happened to his heart friend. Estara whirled and strode to the door snapping something in draconic at the goblin guard. Her barely controlled fury showed in the tenseness of her frame and the tightness of her face, but she couldn’t control the sudden glow to her eyes nor the way the shadows in the room began twisting around them. Ian made a whimpering noise and hid behind Kyle. Read the rest of this entry »

The Trap Seventeen

Darya jumped back, startled. Through the portal, he could vaguely see a brick house and quiet street of the sort he’d seen on Gaia. He stared at it for a moment, then turned to look at Julie. She was staring at the portal in shock.

“That’s my home,” she said softly. “Is this real or some kind of trick?”

“It’s no trick,” someone said from behind them. Darya jumped again – he hadn’t sensed the speaker there until she spoke. From Marama’s startled squawk, the same thing had happened to her. All three of them turned to find a tall asrai standing there. She gave a gentle smile at their surprise and cocked her head at Julie. Read the rest of this entry »

Dariad winced. “Are you sure that’s the wisest move? I mean his people are probably too scared to stop him. They don’t deserve–” He paused and scowled. “But why doesn’t his throne intervene?”

“Fear can’t excuse some things, Dariad,” Alaryia said coldly. “Ameliorate them maybe, but not excuse them. But that about his throne is a good question. It should.” Read the rest of this entry »

Chapter Twenty Three

Part Two

When Valeria had told them that they were going to be riding the thunderbirds to Caerdu, Daniel couldn’t help wondering how they would deal with transporting Ebona and Kenna. After all, the two unicorns were a bit large to ride on the giant birds’ backs, even in resting form.

“I suppose they’ll carry us in their talons,” Kenna said when he asked. “That’s how they used to get me into Caerdu before Lyr, well, you know… It’s not the most comfortable way to travel, but it does the job and while the two of us could gallop there almost as fast as we’ll fly, in the current circumstances it’s safer than trying to get to the ground entrance. Ishleen will fly as well, of course.”  The unicorn pointed her flaming copper horn at the nightmare, who flapped her wings a little in agreement. Read the rest of this entry »

The Trap Sixteen

Karen watched Kyle pacing around the room. It had been a couple of hours since he woke up and Darya still wasn’t back. His absence was clearly starting to get to Kyle, who was twitching slightly and rubbing at his arms. “And why did he he suddenly shut me out like that?”

“Do you suppose it was a trap and that girl did something to him?” Jason asked.

“It’s not that,” Kyle said. “He was already really upset, then she told him something that made him furious. He blocked me out before I could work out what. I can’t even tell where he is.” He paced over to the window and stared out. “Why would he do that?”

“I don’t know, but I don’t like it,” Sean said. “You didn’t pick anything up?”

“Something about the Core,” Kyle frowned. “Other than that, no. But I have this churning feeling in my stomach.”

Karen felt much the same. The feeling that something bad was going to happen was scratching against her skin and drying her mouth. She wanted to reach out to Kyle and tell him everything would be okay, but she couldn’t because somehow, she knew it wouldn’t. She was trying to think of something to say when the alarms went off again. Kyle stiffened and Jason and Sean shot to their feet.

“That must be the other dragon knights come to rescue those three,” Jason said. He looked over at Kyle. “Are you okay to fight?”

“I’ll be fine,” Kyle said. “I need a distraction, anyway.”

Darya only managed to pull his fury under control when he heard Julie scream and realised the water surging around him had knocked her over. It wasn’t her fault, so he pulled the wave in with effort and managed to grunt an apology as she climbed to her knees.

“No, I’m sorry.” Julie gave him a sad smile. “I didn’t realise this would be so personal for you or I would have given you more warning. I mean, I knew that you wouldn’t be happy with what it had done, but I had no idea it was your heart friend’s family. What are you going to tell him?”

“I don’t know. I think it’ll kill us both if I try. I can feel it’ll kill us both once it no longer needs him.” He clenched his fists and forced himself not to lose control again. Something occurred to him and he gave her a curious look.

“Why didn’t it kill you guys? I mean it tried with you and Marama but what about the others?”

“Oh, Gerian can block it,” she said. “But he’s not protecting me any more. I’m not sure who stopped it that time. Maybe the first blue dragon intervened. We’re near his territory.” She shook her head even as she said that. “But I can’t see why. I mean with Gerian acting so close to his border he might watch, but why help me? From what I hear he’s okay, better than Gerian anyway, but I just want to go home! I do-” She gave a gasp as there was a popping sound and a glowing blue gate appeared in front of them.

Chapter Twenty Three

Part One

“Mummy!” Salia flew from the portal and into her mother’s arms. “I missed you!”

“Moppet!” Valeria bent down and pulled her daughter into a hug. “I’ve missed you too. How’s Gaia?”

“It’s strange,” Salia said. “Did you know we can eat plants there? I tried some.” She wrinkled her nose. “They taste horrible.”

“So I’ve heard.” Valeria chuckled. “Did you try chocolate yet? I bet you like that.”

“Mm-hmm.” Salia nodded enthusiastically. “Kari does as well.”

“I’m not surprised.” Valeria straightened up and put an arm around her daughter’s shoulder. “So what’s the plan?”

“We need to go to Caerdu and collect Dariad and Alaryia.” Ystelyan turned to Matthias. “Neither of them is willing to leave until they’ve spoken to you. The Core attacked the City. Alaryia managed to stop it.”

“What!” The colour drained from Matthias’s face. He opened and shut his mouth a couple of times then took a deep breath and closed his eyes. For a moment he seemed to be listening to something then he nodded. “Ah, I see.” He opened his eyes and looked at Valeria. “They need Indirian’s help?”

“Yes,” Valeria said. “It tried it here as well. Mother stopped it.”

“What about Waldhafen?” Birke asked sharply. “Can El protect it from here?”

“For now,” Valeria replied. “Though it is tiring for both of us given the distances involved. We can only manage it because her sanctuary is there.” She paused and looked down. “And because Estara is helping. Mother is more worried about the army King Plamen has heading for the border. He’s never much cared for Waldhafen’s independence from him. Mother is certain some of the border fires were not accidents. If he’s using the Core’s revelations as an excuse, he could destroy the whole forest.”

“I really doubt that Estara would allow that,” Ystelyan said. “And his throne wouldn’t tolerate it either.”

“No, they don’t like tyrants, do they,” Valeria said. “And Plamen has always skirted that line too closely for my taste.”

It’s already stung him a time or two, Elaranor said. He’s taken to only using it during dragon attacks. He knows it won’t hurt him then. It can’t reach him if he avoids it.

“Well, that suggests a solution, doesn’t it?” Matthias cocked his head at Valeria. “The thrones can talk to each other, right?”

“Yes, but I don’t see-” Valeria broke off and stared at him. “You want to fake a dragon attack on his people to force him to use his throne?”

“If his throne knew it was feint that might work.” Ystelyan narrowed his eyes. “And the notion would appeal to Estara, especially since it would mean she didn’t have to attack them for real. Let’s mention it to Alaryia and Dariad when we get to Caerdu.”

“You should check on your neighbours as well, Val,” Sarah said. “You don’t have anyone like Plamen to deal with but who knows what the Core is pushing them to do.”

“I already have.” Valeria pinched the bridge of her nose. “Several of them are gathering troops. I’ve locked down the borders. It should hold until we get back.”

***

“What’s the final total?” Dariad asked Hried as they waited for Valeria and the others.

“Seventeen dead and another hundred and nine needing treatment for mental damage and essence burn,” Hried said sadly. “Mostly at the edges of the city where the first dragon’s protective shield took longest to reach. We were lucky so many people had come to hear what she had to say or we’d have lost a lot more.” His face crumpled and he punched the wall furiously. “How can it do this? I know it’s broken but it’s supposed to protect us!”

“If I hadn’t believed what Alaryia said on the strength of the mirror, this would have proved it,” Brita said. “But I got the feeling it caught her by surprise as well.” She cast a questioning glance at Alaryia.

“It did,” she agreed. “It shouldn’t be able to do that; any strikes it makes are supposed to be surgical. Then again it’s not supposed to be able to fail to enforce the Heart laws either.” She stared out of the cave entrance into the darkness and tutted to herself, brows knitted in a worried frown. “I’m missing something.”

“I know it’s important but we can worry about it after we’re done.” Dariad paused as heard the sound of approaching wings. He reached out to check who was approaching and was relieved to touch Valeria’s mind. “They’re here.”

“Yes.” Alaryia was still frowning. “Maybe Elaranor or Indirian will have some insight on this situation.”

Chapter Twenty Two

Part Six

The throne was shielding him, Dariad realised. He’d be vulnerable as soon as he stood up. His people weren’t faring as well as he was. Brita was on her knees, sobbing, and Hried had curled up into a ball. He looked at the rest of the crowd and saw that they too were collapsing.

Isn’t there anything we can do? he asked the throne.

I’m afraid not, it replied. A solution to the Core is not something we’re designed for. It didn’t even exist when we were created.

But–

Hush, Dariad, Alaryia interrupted. I’ve got it. She rose to her feet and raised one hand above her head. After a moment a soft glow diffused out from her hand and surrounded the crowd before sliding into the walls. That will protect them temporarily but I’d call Matthias and your father if I were you. Your people may be willing to work with me temporarily but I doubt they’re ready to become official renegades. He who was Indirian should be able to protect them.

She’s right, Valeria said. Mother says the Core is trying to attack my people as well but she’s stopping it. She also suggests that Morvena makes contact with the metal guardian – She who was Khryseis should be able to block the Core from having too much influence over the lake while we’re organising things.

I’ll do that, Morvena said. I think I know how.

Matthias is coming here to discuss the plan, Valeria said. Do you want me to talk to him then?

Yes, please, Dariad said. We’d better end this conversation now. I need to see to my people.

I’ll call you later, Valeria said. I’m glad I found out about this. It’s quicker than Imps.

Indeed, Dariad said and broke the connection. He stood and looked out at his people. “Is everyone okay?”

The initial response was groans but Hried slowly uncurled and nodded. “Thanks to the first dragon, yes. It really meant to kill, you know.”

“It was frightened,” Brita added. “So very frightened. It heard what she said to us and it is terrified it’s true so it’s lashing out at anyone who believes it.” She gave Alaryia a sly glance. “It’s kind of human that way; do you think you could have infected it?”

Alaryia chuckled. “Not I and not accidentally, but it does suggest that whoever broke it may have been human once… or maybe they still were. I wouldn’t discount it. Mainly because it can’t really have been Speakers and who would that leave?”

“Goblins,” one of the dwarves suggested. Alaryia chuckled again.

“There were only a double handful of goblins in existence at the time. None of them were strong enough.”

“I’ve always thought it was the Yellow one,” another said. “She was the one who attacked the Heart after all.”

“Shalriya?” Alaryia said. “Well it could have been but I think I would have recognised her touc- what do you mean you’ve always thought? How would you have known?”

“Uh.” The dwarf backed away, even though her tone was just puzzled, not threatening. In a flash of ephiphany Dariad realised that it was because he’d slipped up and not because he was afraid of her. Alaryia’s eyes narrowed as she realised the same thing.

“Who do you work for?” she asked sharply.

The dwarf didn’t answer. He shot towards the door, only to be stopped when two of his fellows grabbed him. He didn’t struggle as they dragged him back towards the dais.

“Bring him up here,” Dariad said. “Let’s get to the bottom of this.”

“I’m loyal to you, your majesty,” he said sullenly. “You tested me yourself after the attempted coup.”

That was true. The mirror had confirmed both that Vaettir had been under the influence of the Elapyron refugees and that he was loyal to Dariad. Which made this whole thing very strange indeed.

“I remember,” Dariad said, “But I need to find out how you know what you know.”

“My mother told me when I was child,” he said. “She was a secret renegade.”

“He lies!” one of the unicorns yelled, though Dariad had already guessed that from Vaettir’s desperate tone.

“I’ll say he does,” Alaryia said. “While it’s not impossible his mother may have been renegade, I find it highly unlikely her patron would have told her enough to form an opinion if she were – and that’s assuming her patron knew.”

The dwarf twisted, trying to get loose from his captors as Dariad offered him the hilt of a short knife and jerked his head towards the mirror. “I think you’d better tell us what really happened.” he said.

The dwarf winced. “I- I- I don’t know how I know, I just always have,” he said. “And I’ve always known no one must find out what I knew and that I had to hide how if they did. But I didn’t realise the Heart was still alive.” He sounded utterly defeated as he sliced his palm and let the blood flow in to the mirror. It took it only seconds to confirm what he said. The unicorn who had called him on his lie also confirmed it.

“Vaettir, come here,” Alaryia said softly. He cowered back and she sighed. “I’m not going to hurt you. I just have an inkling what’s going on with you and I’d like to check it.”

Vaettir stared at her for a moment and then tottered towards her. She smiled at him reassuringly, laid a gentle hand on his forehead and closed her eyes. After a moment she made an enlightened noise.

“Interesting,” she said. “You grew up near a Core Gate, didn’t you? It seems you developed a sensitivity to it. That’s how you knew.” She sighed. “The Core realised that you knew and it was responsible for the compulsion to hide it and lie about it once you did slip up – which would never have happened if I hadn’t been shielding you.”

“I did grow up near a Core gate,” he conceded after a long moment. “And that makes a crazy kind of sense.” He turned to Dariad and bowed.

“Forgive me, my king, for trying to deceive you.”

“There’s nothing to forgive, Vaettir,” Dariad said. “You had no choice.” He frowned over at Alaryia. “How many speakers who grew up near gates do you think this sort of thing has happened to?”

“Far too many. Especially since the heart started to awaken,” she said. “And he’s lucky it only terrified him into keeping it secret. I’ve known it kill some of the others. I have several renegades who fled to me in similar circumstances.”

Dariad frowned again. “It’s out of control?” he asked.

“Unfortunately yes,” she said. Which is why we have to support Matthias-idan in reining it in, she appended mentally. And why it mustn’t know that that’s what we are planning. If it realises it’ll move to block us.

I know, he agreed. Though Val has been discussing it with Ystelyan.

Valeria has her mother to help her, she said. It can’t hear what’s happening there. Once we have the help of Matthias and your father we’ll be able to block it as well. Until then we need to keep it quiet.

Darya closed his eyes and tried to ignore the cold malice in the furious blast from the Core. Anger, disdain and hatred aimed not just at the dragons or the dragon knights but at Kyle and the others as well. He swallowed back nausea – it didn’t bear thinking about. Instead, he knelt down by the hercian bird and checked on her. She was still unconscious but now that Julie was awake she should be coming around soon. Read the rest of this entry »

Chapter Twenty Two

Part Five

Dariad? Morvena’s voice was as clear to him as if she were there. What in the world is the Core telling me? You have the first dragon there? If I didn’t know better, I’d say it had gone insane.

It has, actually, but that bit’s true. He prodded at the web connecting them. Ah! I think I can use this to show you. He condensed recent events down into mental images and sent them to her, followed by a more detailed exposition of what Alaryia had shown them in the mirror.

There was a prolonged silence once he had finished. While he could feel that she was still there, he could get no sense of what Morvena was thinking. When she finally spoke again she wasn’t as distressed as he expected. Read the rest of this entry »

Alaryia frowned at him, then produced a ball of raw mabain from one of the pockets in her robe. “It was more than worth it. It was absolutely necessary.” She began playing with the ball of mabain, spinning it into random shapes. “You know your entire world is made of this stuff?”
