Chapter Twenty Four

Part One

“But that’s the eyrie!” Karen gasped when she realised where Lyrrekka and Ystelyan were carrying them. “The Heart is under the the eyrie?”

“That makes a lot sense, actually,” Alban said from behind her. “We knew something was hidden there and that a dragon was involved in hiding it.” Read the rest of this entry »

Chapter Twenty Three

Part Ten

“So what’s the plan now?” Lydia asked. “I mean we’re going after the Core and releasing the bonds on the Heart, but how are we going to do that? It seems like we won’t have much time between the two.”

“Which is why we’ll do it in two groups,” Matthias said. “Sonia, Daniel, Mela, Kyle, Darya and Lyrrekka will go with Ystelyan and Rilletta to where the Heart is, while the rest of us head to where the Core is. The moment you feel Alaryia rein it in – and believe me you will feel it – Mela will release the Heart.” He gave Alaryia a wry smile. “Did I get that right?” Read the rest of this entry »

Darya felt his mouth go dry as he stepped through the portal after Rilletta . The sudden sense of dozens of dragons surrounded him, their hunger tearing at his skin, and it took all his willpower to avoid turning and running back through the portal. He swallowed hard and tried to concentrate on his surroundings. No heart friend or warrior had ever penetrated a dragon’s lair and returned. He might learn something useful here.

The caves that formed Ystelyan’s palace were quite obviously carved by water. Even though they were dry now, he could hear and smell water not far away. It reminded him of the dry areas of his family’s grotto, except… Read the rest of this entry »

Chapter Twenty Three

Part Nine

Andrew had a split second’s warning to break his connection to Naria only because Laxmi – who was feeding him soup – stiffened. The next moment, the door burst open and Emms burst in. He was flushed and obviously in a fury about something. Laxmi didn’t look around at his entrance but instead rolled her eyes at Andrew and continued carefully spooning soup into his mouth.

Emms muttered incoherently as he stomped towards them. Andrew had to fight to keep his glee showing on his face. Something must have gone wrong for Emms. Even though it didn’t get him out of this mess, the thought gave Andrew immense satisfaction.

“This is bloody ridiculous! I thought Morgan hated dragons. Why is he working with them?”

Laxmi gave a half smile that was gone before she finally turned away from Andrew. “I suspect he hates you more. You did kidnap his son, after all. That would piss anyone off. And you knew he was working with them, so what’s happened?”

Emms winced visibly at Laxmi’s swearing. “Language!”

Laxmi sighed and shook her head. “What happened?” she repeated.

“I had a plan to use the Core to distract the Warriors by attacking their allies in Talonyka, but it’s falling apart because of this alliance with some of the dragons.” He gave a heavy sigh. “I think they’re going to move against it as well. We have to stop them.”

Andrew tried not to stiffen and to keep his expression bland, staring straight ahead as he listened intently. It was a shame he didn’t dare link to Naria when Emms was in the room; he’d be able to sense it. But if Andrew could commit their plans to memory, then he could tell Naria after they’d left and she could pass it on to Ystelyan. From there it would surely reach his father.

“Well, you can still get past the wards if Matthias puts them back and they can’t destroy it. Not yet.”

“I can if he puts them back. What if he has someone else do it?”

“Then you really will have a problem.” Laxmi said unsympathetically. “You brought this on yourself, you know. But you’ll find some wa– Oh, I see this isn’t what’s really worrying you. You’re afraid because he’s found allies who might figure out who you are. Which reminds me, you really should get your sketchbooks from the farm before Matthias sees them.”

“They wouldn’t mean anything to him,” he said. “Though I suppose I should worry in case he shows them to someone who would.”

“Yes, they would,” she said. “He’s seen them.”

“What! When?”

“When his kids were eight,” she replied. “Chased them through the woods in Devon, apparently. You can imagine why.”

“How–”

“He told me about it.” She jerked her head in Andrew’s direction.

“You should have told me immediately!” Emms said. “If they find out what we’re planning, they’ll stand more chance of stopping us.”

“You weren’t here,” she replied. “And then I was retuning that damned crystal. It slipped my mind.”

“Damn, I’ll have to go and get them today and make sure Cat doesn’t talk, but I need to stop them reaching the Core.” He tutted to himself. “Do you think you can handle defending the Core if I give you troops?”

“Probably,” she said. “That world doesn’t mess me up like it does most people, but Matthias knows I’m not Resonant, so they’ll be expecting it to.” She looked down thoughtfully. “Send Huldre with me. I’m not that strong so his raw strength may come in useful.

“That’s a good idea. And I’ll send some of the stronger dragons as well,” he hesitated. “But be careful, Laxmi. You’ll never beat them in a fair fight. Use caution and trickery to keep them away from it.”

“Yes, Jayden,” she said in an exasperated tone. “I know that. I doubt Huldre would let me forget if I tried.”

“That’s true. I’ll go and collect those sketchbooks.” He hesitated. “I think I’ll be bringing Cat back as well. I don’t want to hurt her and Morgan or his bloody wife will tease the information out of her anyway if I just block her memories.”

“Now that’s a good idea,” Laxmi agreed. “You need to check her anyway. I still think you botched the boost. You should have asked her first.”

“I didn’t botch it,” he said stubbornly. “And I didn’t ask because she would have said no.” He headed for the door and then paused. “Let him finish his soup himself. I want you to head over there immediately.

“Very well.” Laxmi gave Andrew a smile and pushed the bowl and spoon into his hands. “Sorry kid, gotta go.”

Andrew waited until they’d both left and then quickly re-established his bond with Naria and began replaying the conversation to her.

Twenty Five Days to go on the presale!  Take a look if you haven’t already.

Even if you can’t afford to buy please consider helping spread the word. Thanks!

Chapter Twenty Three

Part Eight

The other prisoners edged away from the fire dwarf who’d fired the shot while he stood there trembling, all signs of defiance gone. As she stalked towards him, he made a whimpering sound and collapsed to his knees.

Estara stared down at him for a moment, then reached down and grabbed a handful of his orange hair, yanking his head up so he had to meet her eyes.

“Why?” she asked in a cold, controlled tone. “Why attack that girl when you’d already lost?” Read the rest of this entry »

The unicorn who joined them was one of the most beautiful of her kind Darya had ever seen. Her hide was white as breaking foam in moonlight with a green mane and tail which resembled strands of kelp. He would have taken her for one of the Each Uisge – albeit an especially fair one – were it not for her iridescent pearl horn. He stared at her in awe; water affinity unicorns were rare among non-renegades.

“We’re not so common among renegades either,” she responded to his unspoken thought. “Though Ystelyan’s lands do hold the largest herd.” She lay down beside him. “Now I suppose you’ll want to check that I really am what I say.” Read the rest of this entry »

Chapter Twenty Three

Part Seven

Alaryia swore violently in draconic as she leapt across the square to kneel by the fallen dragon. She laid a hand on his shoulder and closed her eyes, then swore again.

Watch them! she snapped in Kyle’s head. Make sure they don’t cause any more trouble.

Of course. Kyle drew his urumi and placed himself between Plamen’s soldiers and the nymphs and Ian. What about the one who did it? He glared coldly at the now cowering dwarf.

Let Est deal with him. She’s on her way. Read the rest of this entry »

Chapter Twenty Three

Part Six

Most of the village was beyond saving, but there were a few buildings near the ruined village square that could be repaired if the fire was put out soon. Kyle deliberately chose the closest one to the square so that he could see what was happening and go help in the unlikely event that it was needed.

Heart friends were equal in strength to each other, so Kyle was not surprised when Nerezza’s first attack hit the fire dwarf like a tsunami of darkness and threw him backwards into a nearby wall. She stormed in behind the wave and slashed the throat of one of the soldiers before he could react. He collapsed to the floor, releasing the captive nymph and clutching his throat in a vain attempt to stem the blood flow. The other soldier leapt back and reached for his sword.

Then the dragons swept in, flying deliberately low and landed at various points around the troops Plamen had left in the village. Not unpredictably, they panicked and began fleeing in all directions, leaving their prisoners behind.

They’re probably assuming that we’ll gorge on the prisoners first giving them time to escape. Alaryia was still in her dragon form. They’re in for a surprise. She jerked her head and the two kedri flew off after the two largest groups of soldiers.

I think the prisoners are thinking that as well. Kyle nodded to where several of the chained nymphs were clinging to each other while others struggled against their chains, trying to escape.

Yes, she said sadly. It’s not surprising.

Do you want me to try and calm them down?

No, they won’t listen to you and they’ll calm down on their own once they realise we’re not hurting them – eventually anyway. You keep putting their houses out. That’ll engender more good will than talking. She looked up the hill to where Ian and the two goblin healers were waiting. You can come down now. I’m afraid it looks like there’s a lot of work for you.

She turned away from Nerezza, who was trying to calm the nymph Plamen’s son had been about to murder, and stalked to where he was trying to crawl away. She reached out with one of her huge clawed front feet and plucked him off the ground. The fire dwarf thrashed around a bit, then collapsed into unconsciousness. Kyle wasn’t sure if he’d fainted from fright or Alaryia had fed on him to stop his struggles and he couldn’t bring himself to care.

Alaryia dropped the unconscious dwarf to the ground and finally sank down into her human form as the two kedri returned, herding most of the soldiers who had tried to escape. A moment later, Ian and the two goblins came running into the square. Ian ran straight past everyone and into a totally ruined and still smouldering building.

“It’s okay, you can come out now!” he said. There was a long pause then a creaking noise as a trapdoor opened and two teenage nymphs looked out. Both of them looked nervously at the dragons but then one of them spotted Ian and scrambled out – all thoughts of the dragons obviously swept away by the excitement of meeting her heart friend. Kyle would have taken her for a storm nymph except for the fact that instead of lightning crackling through her translucent white hair, there was something else. Knowing Ian’s technopathic talent, Kyle rather thought it might be some sort of mental representation of data. An odd thought since she couldn’t possibly have any idea what a computer was.

“Pensura! Tondra!” The injured storm nymph tried to get to her feet when she saw her daughters emerge from the cellar but Fazina stopped her.

“Hush, your daughters are safe, I promise. We’re not going to hurt them when we came all this way to save them.” Fazina stroked the nymph’s hair. “You should sleep. You need it to heal.” She must have backed it up with some sort of mental command because the nymph stopped trying to get up and collapsed unconscious into the goblin’s lap.

“Mother!” Pensura turned from Ian to stare at Fazina. “What did you do to her?”

“She’s just sleep–”

“Traitor!” One of the captured soldiers screamed. “If I have to die, you’re dying too!” Fire exploded from him in a desperate burst and flew towards the ruined structure. Ian grabbed Pensura and her sister and threw up a shield, but Kyle could tell it wouldn’t be enough.

Before anyone else could react, the wave of fire smashed home – not into Ian and the nymphs, but into the building itself. Kyle watched in horror as stones and flaming wood crashed down, shutting his eyes to avoid seeing them crushed.

The sound of wings made him open them again to see that one of the dragons had managed to get there in time to shield the three with his body. He screamed as burning debris scorched his hide but held fast, even when a beam stabbed into his side. Only when the debris stopped falling did he move away and return to human form.

Kyle held his breath and waited for him to frenzy, even though he was sure Nerezza and Alaryia could hold him until Estara arrived. But it seemed his injuries were worse than Kyle had thought. Instead of frenzying, he collapsed to the ground and started convulsing.

Side Story Three

Two Years Ago

The Trap Eighteen

It had all gone according to plan. The seven dragon knights – all of then except Julie – were lying on the floor of their rooms in Elapyron City. Sarah had arrived and was carefully hanging a pendant around each of their necks. The artifacts would hide them from Gerian and hopefully prevent them causing any more trouble.

“Are we taking them back to Brierthorne?” Jason asked.

She shook her head. “I don’t think that’s wise. I don’t want them anywhere near the school until we’re sure we’ve turned them away from that bloody dragon. We’re not equipped to keep prisoners, anyway. We’ll use their bonds to Earth and send them to their homes, then find them later.”

“But what if we can’t find them? And what about Julie?”

“I don’t think Julie is a danger. I just hope she can get home. As to the others, it’s a risk we’ll have to take. I’d say their reappearance should provoke news we can use to find them, but for some reason their disappearance didn’t so I’m dubious.” Sarah sighed. “But if we can’t find them, at least we’ll know that the dragon can’t either. We should send them back before they wake up.”

That bit went according to plan as well right up until the last two – Alison and Logan . As Kyle went to pick Alison, her eyes snapped open and she rolled away from him.

“I won’t go back!” She lashed out at him with her foot. “There’s nothing for me there. There’s no one to protect me there.” She pulled herself to her knees and glared at them for a long moment before breaking down in racking sobs, hugging her knees and rocking back and forth. “Want to stay here.”

“I-I think something bad happened to her on Earth,” Kyle said softly. “Julie said as much, didn’t she? And I think she told Darya more.”

“Let me talk to her,” Logan said softly. “I can usually calm her down.” Kyle looked around and saw the boy was awake and watching them. He waited for Kyle to nod and step back before crawling over to her. “Come on, Ali, calm down and think this through. Earth’s not that bad. I like it. You used to like it.”

For a minute it seemed Alison wasn’t listening as she just continued rocking and sobbing, but then she mumbled something about that being before.

“I know, but we can’t stay here. We lost and they aren’t going to let us stay here.” He paused then added, “And I think Julie may have been right. I know he saved your life but he was just using us.” He gave her a little hug. “You can come home with me. Mum and Dad always liked you and they’ll find some way to let you stay.”

“But I like it here,” Alison said quietly but she let him help her to her feet. “But if there’s no choice, I guess…” Tears were still running down her cheeks.

“There isn’t.” He turned to look at Sarah. “Can you send her back with me? Her family is dead, she’s got nowhere else to go.”

“I can.” She placed a hand on his shoulder. “Hmm, you’re homesick. Makes this easier.” A gate opened in front of them and the two headed through it.

After they’d gone, Sarah pinched the bridge of her nose. “I’m going to tell Matt what’s happened and get Ian monitoring the news. You should stay here. You need to find out what happened to Darya and the dragon may launch another rescue or a revenge attack.” She opened another gate and vanished.

Almost as soon as it had closed behind her, a voice struck into all of their heads.

Warriors, Heart friends, come to the gate tower immediately. I need your assistance urgently. The order would have brooked no dissent even if they hadn’t known it was the Core itself.

Chapter Twenty Three

Part Five

A/N: I’m going to be doing a presale/crowdfund for The Dragon Wars Saga Arc One (that’s chapters 1-9 approx 81k words) book in March. If you’re even slightly interested please take a look at this post where I outline the expenses I will accrue doing from putting the book version out and the perks I’m thinking of for presalers. Feedback from potential buyers/contributors on how to make the perk packages better would be gratefully received.

Nerezza turned out to be a lovely dark nymph. That wasn’t surprising; Kyle had never met an unlovely nymph. Dark, lambent eyes shone out of an equally dark face and her long, purple-black hair seemed to fade into the surrounding shadows rather than ending. Her first action on appearing in the room with Gendalian was to rush over to Ian and take his hands.

“Don’t worry, we’ll find your heart friend, I promise!” she said. She glanced over at Estara. “I picked up just about everything.”

“I hope so,” Ian said. He was pale and swallowed visible. “She’s saying that there’s banging outside. She thinks they’ve realised she’s alive. The wards are keeping them out but she can’t have long until they fetch an unweaver.” Read the rest of this entry »
