Chapter Nineteen

Part One

Lydia collapsed face down on her bed. She’d been able to ignore the weight in her stomach while they were planning what to do, but now that they were home and their parents were busy organising sleeping arrangements for their guests, the enormity of their loss struck her. She buried her face in her pillow and sobbed quietly. Would they ever see Andrew again? It shouldn’t have ended like this. They were the good guys, why hadn’t they won? Read the rest of this entry »

Karen paced the room as they waited for the all clear. Even through the thick stone walls, the sounds of a pitched battle coming from beyond the inner walls of the city were all too clear. They were gradually coming closer and it didn’t sound like it was going well.

It was making them all tense. Hannah sat in the corner hugging her knees. Sean was beside her with his head resting on his forearms. Kyle was leaning against the wall, scowling worriedly and clicking his tongue against his teeth in a way he only did when he was upset. Read the rest of this entry »

Silence met that question. Kyle looked around and realised that everyone in the room was staring at Tarian without moving – except Lyrrekka. She positioned herself between Tarian and Matthias in a way that made it clear she intended to protect him if needed.

“That’s really your call,” Tarian said finally. He was a little pale but otherwise looked unafraid as he stepped around Lyrrekka and met Matthias’s gaze. “I’d really rather you didn’t kill me but I’m not going back to Gerian. And I don’t think you’d let me even if I wanted to.”

“Certainly not. I barely know you, but Lyr likes you so I’m not going to kill you in cold blood.” Matthias sighed. “But I can’t cut you loose. I’m not sure you’re trustworthy.” Read the rest of this entry »

“You surprised him,” Alaryia said when she returned a few minutes later. “He really expected you to kill her, you know. I think you returning her has actually shaken him up a bit.”

“Is that a good thing?” Matthias asked.

“Oh yes.” Alaryia nodded. “He needs shaking up. Holding a grudge for a few millennia is just a little ridiculous.” She gave a smile. “I’ve never seen Tak so relieved as he was when I brought her to him. I’m not sure what she is to him, but it’s not just a normal courtier.”

“She’ll be okay, won’t she?” Sonia asked. Read the rest of this entry »

“But why the Core Gate?” Chief Councillor Anahita said as platters of meat were brought into the central palace that evening. “It’s not like dragons can use it.”

The silver-haired air haltia had done most of the speaking since Aodh had brought them to meet the ruling council of Elapyron. She seemed friendly enough but something about the rest of the council was grating on Hannah’s nerves. They were so quiet – only addressing Anahita when they did speak – and only a couple had introduced themselves.

“No, but humans can,” one of the others – a daoine who hadn’t introduced himself – said. “Perhaps they mean to send these Dragon Knights through. It wouldn’t be the first time that one of them has tried to get to the Core.”

“We don’t think so, councillor,” Sean said. “They seem to be targeting things of power as energy sources to form some sort of grid. There’s no real pattern to what they are targeting.”

“A grid,” Anahita said sharply. “What are the other things they’ve targeted?”

“The Gaia gate at Esen Peak, an object called the key-” Sean began.

“From the fire affinity zone in Talora.” Anahita paled. “Damn. Tell me the others quickly.”

Sean listed them off carefully. Anahita looked more and more confused and worried. By the time he finished she had her head in her hands.

“Councillor?” Aodh asked. “Do you know what they’re doing?”

“I’ll need a few more attack details to check, but yes, I think I do.” Anahita stared at her hands. “What I can’t figure out is why. What good would the Heart wards do a dragon?”

“What are the heart wards?” Sean asked.

“Ah… that is… What were they would be a better question. They were part of the weave of the world. They were powered by the Heart, so when it was destroyed they went inert.” Anahita sighed. “There was a lot of the Heart’s energy flowing through them, which is why that gate to Gaia was built at Esen Peak. Even without the Heart’s power flowing through them, the nodes in the heartlands remained points of stability and power. That’s why we have a Core Gate. All of them are at former nodes.” She shook her head and frowned. “I still don’t see what use it would be to the dragons.”

“And the key thing?” Hannah asked.

“The extra stability makes former nodes good places to secure things,” Anahita said. “Perhaps your grid pattern is because it underlies their hiding places, not because the dragons intend to use it.”

“It’s possible,” Sean said hesitantly. “Except I’m sure they want these places and things to power something. I think we’re missing something.” He cocked his head at her. “How come you know so much about this?”

“I researched the wards while attempting to find some way to hold back the outlanders. It was a dead end, but I learned a lot.” She wrung her hands some more then took a breath. “Whyever they want it, we have to stop them from taking control of the gate. You have a pla-” She broke off as a sharp alarm sounded throughout the city.

“Sounds like we’re about to find out out,” Kyle said, but Anahita shook her head.

“No, that’s the alarm for an outlander attack. It’s not your problem, warriors. I’ll have Aodh escort you back to your chambers.”

Valeria knew it wasn’t going well the moment Tarian returned with Halindan in his arms. He gave the council a perfunctory nod before racing over to Rilletta. He exchanged a few words with her, then vanished with one of her attendants who hadn’t joined the attack.

“I don’t like the look of that,” Weide said. Rilletta rubbed the bridge of her nose then rose to her feet and strode over to them.

“Emms has managed to activate his device,” she said. “They’re still on the attack, but…” she trailed off meaningfully. Read the rest of this entry »

Andrew felt something race up his spine and into the hood that covered his head as the device activated. Suddenly, he could sense every dragon who his father currently had collared. Apart from the three in the room, there were a dozen others.

“Right then,” Emms said. “You three assist Laxmi.”

Andrew opened his eyes in time to see the two of the three dragons turn to fight their former allies. The third was still on her knees retching by Laxmi. Matthias grabbed the wrist of the collared male as he struck at him. Read the rest of this entry »

“Welcome to Elapyron City, warriors.” The tall, mail-clad fire haltia who met them at the city gates bowed. “The Council sends its apologies for not being here to greet you personally, but they’ve been in emergency session since the Life Warrior sent us notice that the Core Gate may be the Dragon Knights’ next target. I am Aodh, the city’s warden. I have prepared chambers in the central complex for your use. Please follow me.” He turned and strode back through the gates towards a second wall in the centre of the city.

Though city didn’t seem the right word. From what Karen could see, the entire place was barely larger than a large village. She’d be very surprised if more than a couple of thousand people lived here. Then again, none of the settlements they’d seen had been that big. Read the rest of this entry »

Lydia blinked furiously to clear her vision, peering in through the doorway her father had blasted open. She spotted Andrew immediately, Chained to a throne-like device with Kimi beside him. Emms was perched on the arm and it looked like he’d been trying to force Andrew to eat. The room was large, but Lydia had a sinking feeling they wouldn’t all fit safely with everyone who was already there.

Her father took in the size and must have reached the same conclusion. He jerked his head at Ystelyan’s goblins and the half dozen centaurs from Waldhafen. “No way we’ll all fit. Secure the rest of the camp! We could do without being attacked from behind anyway. Everyone else, let’s go!” Read the rest of this entry »

The headache faded slowly as the girl fiddled with a panel near the hood over his head. As it faded to nothing but a ghost of its former intensity, Andrew raised his head and looked around the room. There was no sign of Jayden Emms or Huldre, just a handful of technicians and guards.

“He’s grabbing some more guards from the other camps,” she said softly. “He thinks your father will get our location from that green dragon and come after us. He means to be ready.”

Andrew glanced at her. He wanted to tell her to get out of his head but instead he just croaked, “thirsty!” That was an understatement. His mouth was parched and his throat was raw. Read the rest of this entry »
