“What does she say?” Lydia asked when Alaryia’s imp came flying to Lyrrekka.
“Let me see.” Lyrrekka absorbed it and her eyebrows shot up. “Now that never occurred to me.” She scowled thoughtfully. “That might actually work.”
“What might?” Lydia asked.
“Gerian technically owes Karen a very large debt for using his venom on her while she was still a child,” Lyrrekka said. “So she suggests that Takilyan and Endaria use that as a wedge.” She shook her head. “I still can’t believe he did that.”
“Getting him to acknowledge it will be a trick,” Tarian said. “He can be very stubborn about admitting he’s overstepped the line.”
“Dar has a suggestion as well,” Laxmi said from the door. “Sorry, I heard what you were discussing and passed it on. He says if you said you would search for Kaylaria then Gerian would probably do anything that you asked.”
“Darlryan-mirian thinks she’s alive too?” Lyrrekka said.
Laxmi shook her head. “He’s convinced she’s dead but Gerian believes she’s alive. He thinks it can’t do any harm to look anyway, just in case he’s wrong.” She hesitated. “I hope she’s alive. Kaylaria was always kind – even to us.”
“Hmm…” Matthias frowned. “While it would be a good lever, I don’t think we have time to go on what is most likely a wild goose chase unless we have to and I’m not willing to lie about it, so let’s hold that one in reserve if we can’t get him to give us the girl’s heart friend.”
“Yes, that would be my thought as well,” Lyrrekka said. “But I’ll pass that on to our allies to hold in reserve.”
“That’s good,” Matthias said. “Today we’re going to try and trick Garrett into revealing himself, so keep an ear out in case we need you for backup. Darya, Kyle and Julie will spend the day scrying for the dragon knights – but don’t go after them until you’ve cleared it with us. And if any new crises come up, send out one of the other teams you’ve put together. If you have reason to think one of the other groups can’t handle it, contact us before you go anywhere.”
“Okay, dad,” Lydia said. “What about Jenny and her mother?”
“Lucas will be staying here today to calm them once they wake,” he said. “They’ll probably both be very scared. Sarah and he had to do some healing on the mother as well – she’s an ember too and while she’d survived the initial pulse unlike many adult embers, it had done some neurological and mental damage.” He looked over at Laxmi. “Sarah thinks she was in the early stages of becoming like you.”
“Possibly,” Laxmi said. “It’s more common in completely non-talented people but it can happen to older embers and it’s a fairly slow process of mental and physical disintegration.” She shuddered violently. “Poor woman. Did Doctor Tyler stop it?”
He nodded. “Indaturan told us how but Sarah had pretty much worked it out on her own anyway after you let her examine you. She says thank you by the way.”
“She’s welcome,” Laxmi said. “You need to get information on the treatment and symptoms out. I do not want to see any more of us. No one deserves that.”
“I agree,” he said. “As soon as we’ve dealt with this problem with Garrett and Kayleigh, we should be able to move things on.” He looked at his watch. “Speaking of which, it’s time for us to get a move on.”

Ah, ok, that explains her reaction to hit Lydia. Ok, I am seeing how she is now, now that she is healed, before disliking her again…
🙂
Well it was a combination of that and panic.
Yeah, I see that now – but hitting Lydia because she “only” was in panic would not sit well with me…
…but with her “condition” I can accept it as long as she behaves now that she is healed…
😛
