Lydia was helping her mother wash the dishes when Andrew’s friends began arriving. George and his father were the first to arrive and came into the kitchen to say hello since George considered Lydia a friend as well.

“Are we starting the classes tonight?” George asked.

“I don’t think so.” Lydia put the stack of plates she had just dried into the cupboard before turning to look at them. “We’re just discussing scheduling today, right, mum?”

“That’s ri–” Sonia didn’t get any further before George interrupted her.

“Lydia! What happened to your eyes?” he asked. “They used to be the same colour as Drew’s, didn’t they?”

“They did,” she agreed. “What happened to me is a long story. We’ll discusss it later as well. For can I get the two of you a drink? We have tea, coffee or lemonade.”

“Lemonade, please,” George said. “I bet dad will have tea.”

“He’s right,” his father said. “No sugar, just a smidge of milk and really strong please.”

“Okay, go sit down and I’ll bring it through.”

After they’d gone, Lydia leaned on the kitchen counter and sighed. “I’ve got to learn to hide my eyes. Too many questions.”

He mother squeezed her shoulder. “Lyr says it’s possible. We’ll talk to her later.”

“Yeah.” Lydia put the kettle on and made George’s father’s tea while her mother poured George’s lemonade.

Almost all of Andrew’s friends questioned Lydia’s eyes when they arrived, which made her glad that she had decided to leave it until they were all here to explain. Once they were all there she glanced at her brother and sighed.

“I think we should deal with what happened to me first. They’ve all asked.”

“Sure,” Andrew said. “That’s probably best.”

George in the meantime was looking from Lydia to Naria and back. “You’re like Drew’s girlfriend now!” he exclaimed. “He told us about dragons but no one said that they are contagious.”

Lydia choked and Naria began giggling.

“I am sort of like Naria but it’s not exactly contagious,” she said. “Let me explain what happnened.” She took a breath and launched into her story.

“Sweet heaven!” George’s father said when she finished. “Andrew get’s kidnapped, you get kidnapped, your family doesn’t have much luck does it?”

Lydia gave a wry smile. “Apparently not,” she said. “But it could be worse, no one is dead – which is a miracle considering how many people are – and I’m not hungry all the time.”

“That’s the silver lining I guess,” he said. “Do you feel different?”

Lydia considered the question before shaking her head. “I just feel like me. Any other questions before Drew tells you about the schedule our parents have made up for your training?”

“Yeah!” Carrie said. “Can we see your dragon form? Or Naria’s? I want to see a real dragon.”

“I don’t see why not.” Lydia slid down the form of a small silver dragon and flew to Carrie’s lap. Carrie stared down at her in amazement.

“Woah! Lap dragon! I want one! Can I take your sister home, Drew?”

“Lyd’s not a pet.” He shook his head and laughed. “Now lets get on with the story.”
