“We should tell Sophie Ashbourne about this,” Sonia said. “Last time I spoke to her, she’d persuaded the government to let Eric and her merge the kids from their project into the new school and she would recognise Dan and Lisa. I don’t think she’d drop us in it but why antagonise an ally by not trusting her in advance?”

“I’m not getting any particular alarms from the thought of Dan doing this,” Sonia said. “Which suggests that it might not be a disaster if he does. I’m still not happy about it, but that might just be a mother’s worry.”

“It probably is,” Daniel said. “You do fuss, mum. We’ll need an escape plan for me if I’m going to do this.”

Matthias looked worried when he and Sonia returned. He sat down in one of the armchairs and scowled at the television. Sonia looked more pensive than worried but still not happy.

“What happened?” Karen asked.

Relief seemed to be the primary feeling on the news when they got back to Earth. The commentators weren’t sure that it would have an effect on the emergences and similar but apparently they all felt that the sky returning to normal was a good sign. What did catch Lydia by surprise was that they were aware its closure wasn’t spontaneous. Apparently the energy Darylyan had poured into the sky had been visible, even though he’d done it in a remote spot. “Turn it up to eleven?” Lydia said. “How do we do that? Actually, how do we do the confusion thing to start with?”

“It’s easy,” Matthias said. “For us anyway. You instinctivly do it against hostiles already–” He broke off and turned to stare at Alsia. “That’s why you won’t tell anyone where Keylaria is, isn’t it? “I think we can wait a while longer,” Matthias said. “But not too long. For now, what did the visions we now have a record of say?”

Adrian frowned. “Well if her visions were right, my ancestors wanted dragons because this Eater of Worlds both can’t stand the taste of psychovores and is vulnerable to attacks from them.”

“What other options?” Adrian asked. “Because I’m drawing a blank.”

“Well first we need to know exactly what the blocks that are missing said,” Alaryia said. “Not just a summary.” She looked at Julie. “Do you remember?”

“Not really, my husband took Sean down there and I only got the cliff notes version from him myself.” She frowned. “As I said, most of the missing material was a lament that they shouldn’t have trusted Xantaria.” She drummed her fingers on the arm of her chair. “But there was something else. He quoted it exactly because it was so weird. ‘Hunger to fight the hungry. Both Asra and Celeste were still sleeping off Halia removing Xantaria’s venom capsules when the group took them and Kezia back to Alaryia’s palace. Alaryia immediately strode over and pushed a pendant into Kezia’s hand.

“Is this like the one Tara has?” Kezia asked.
