“Come on,” Sonia said before hurrying towards stairs. Her face was pale and drawn. Lydia rather thought her mother felt as nauseated by what they’d just seen as she did. What she didn’t expect was to find Julie leaning against the wall just outside the squash courts shuddering violently.
“You aren’t actually going to leave her like that, are you?” Matthias asked.
Julie didn’t respond at once – she didn’t even look around – but eventually she shook her head slowly. Read the rest of this entry »

A/N: A belated Merry Christmas and early Happy New Year to all my reader. Whisper of Damkina returns New Year’s Eve.
—
“I suppose I should give you one more chance to back out,” Julie said when she entered the squash court with Sarah at her shoulder. “Even though you don’t deserve it. I spoke to the healer who’s treating Ken and they aren’t sure he’ll live. He certainly won’t ever use his abilities again if he does after the way you fried his neurons.”
Kelly scowled at her. “Good. He deserves it. And he certainly won’t live once I’m done with him.” The woman’s icy tone made Lydia flinch where she was standing with the other witnesses, looking down on the court through the viewing window. Read the rest of this entry »

“Seems a reasonable suggestion to me,” Julie said.
“Me too,” Trent said.
“No!” There was a loud noise from the satellite family end of the table as someone leapt to their feet, sending their chair clattering to the floor. Lydia turned and realised it was Kelly Milton, the woman who Adrian had impaled when she attacked him. “No, I won’t stand for this.” She vaulted over the tables in a way that made it clear she was completely healed and stalked towards the center of the gym. “Why are we taking these two’s word for it that we were wrong?” She pointed at Julie and Adrian. “They have every reason to lie to us.” She glared straight at Julie. “Caroline Laverne, I challenge you.” Read the rest of this entry »

Alexandra hummed to herself as she considered that. “That’s not going to be easy, Adrian,” she said finally. “Unless Indaturan can get some intelligence out of his prisoner on how to inconvenience her mistress.”
“I can ask him if you want,” he said. Read the rest of this entry »

“So Matthias said that you have a large family,” Alexandra said. “How many of you are their?”
“About thirty,” Faith replied. “And a couple of smaller families. I’m told that’s quite a lot.” She paused at the startled whispers that broke out around the room. “I take it that was correct.”
“That’s one way of putting it,” Alexandra said. “I don’t doubt your word but can you prove you family is that large?” Read the rest of this entry »

Trent had clearly followed Alexandra’s gaze because he raised an eyebrow.
“Ah,” he said after a moment. “I see.”
Alexandra gave him a surprised look. “You do?”
“Of course,” he said. “But I’m not going to spoil the surprise.” Read the rest of this entry »

Lydia and her siblings went with their parents to the meeting again the next morning. Kayleigh and Robert were coming along as well to give evidence and since both were still too weak after their ordeal to walk the short distance to the gym, so Matthias teleported the group there.
Alexandra was waiting for them and smiled warmly at Kayleigh and Robert. “After what we have learned, I am so glad to see you two well. Everyone was worried about you when we learned the truth.” Read the rest of this entry »

Adrian was helping Robert out of the bathroom but both stopped when they saw Sonia and Lydia standing in the room with Kayleigh.
“Sonia Keefe,” Robert said. “An honour to meet you, ma’am.”
“Likewise,” Sonia said. Lydia couldn’t help noticing that she didn’t tell him that he didn’t need to be formal with her the way she had Kayleigh. “How are you feeling?” Read the rest of this entry »

“Do you mind if I come with you?” Alaryia asked. “I’d like to have a look at what else you have available. They could do with something more nourishing.”
“Sure,” Lydia said. “But we’re a bit short at the moment.”
“So I gathered,” Alaryia said as they headed downstairs to kitchen. “But I might spot something you missed.” Read the rest of this entry »

Hannah and Kayleigh’s father ran straight to her his daughter’s side when he entered the room.
“Kayleigh!” He knelt beside the bed and hugged her gently. “I’m so sorry.” You’re completely sure it’s her? He added mentally for everyone but Kayleigh and Robert. It isn’t another imposter? Lydia couldn’t blame him for the anxiety in the circumstances.
I double checked, Darlryan reassured him. It’s definitely them. That trick only works if you don’t know what to look for, and as far as we know Dialdra and her brother were the only two who could do it. Read the rest of this entry »
