Joanne was a dark-haired teen, maybe fourteen or fifteen and tall for her age. She smiled at them all as soon as she came in.

“I’m glad you called me to help with this,” she said. “But I should warn you: my mother wanted me to plant some kind of essence bug while I was here but I’m not going to do that. There’s too much at stake to be trying to score points in our families’ petty feud.”

“I don’t disagree,” Matthias said. “But you’ll have to excuse me if I don’t discount the possibility that you’re just trying to put me off my guard.”

“Given how bad things are between our families, I won’t be upset at all,” she said. “You want to know about my premonition?”

“You say we need to leave him somewhere safe?” Sonia said.

“No,” she said. “I said you need to leave him with Lydia… the younger Lydia.” She frowned. “It’s confusing and complicated. May I sit down?”

“Of course,” Matthias said.

“Thanks.” She rubbed at her temples. “There’s an aspect of my talent I don’t advertise because it freaks people out. One of the reasons I seem to see things no one else does is because I can…” she hesitated, clearly groping for how to explain it. “Sort events.”

“Sort events?” Matthias said blankly.

“Sorry, that was clear as mud, wasn’t it,” Joanne said. “My brains are still scrambled. Once I have a premonition, I can run through scenarios in my head and see how changing it affects things, but it fries my brain. I may as well be an ember for days afterwards. I kept seeing your son die and every change I made didn’t help until I left him with Lydia and she has to be there. If she’s not there, he still dies. But I’m not sure why she makes the difference.”

“You can actually rerun a premonition with changes?” Julie stared at her. “I thought that was just a myth.”

“Sometimes I wish it was,” Joanne said. “It’s going to kill me. I mean literally – recovery takes longer every–” She broke off as Sarah reached over and laid a hand on her forehead.

“Bloody hell, girl! What are you doing to yourself?” She gave Matthias a serious look. “This child is literally killing part of her brain every time she uses this ability and then having to route around the damage. She’s not actually going to die of it, but she is going to end up an Ember or even a null permanently if she doesn’t stop. Carrie’s not a bad healer. She has to know. She shouldn’t be letting her do this to herself.”

“And she has the nerve to accuse me of being a bad parent,” Matthias said. “Not that I’m ungrateful but have more care for yourself, Joanne. You matter too, you know.”

Joanne gave him a weak smile. “The world is more important than I am. And if we lose any of your children, it’s game over.”
