Don’t miss the boat!

By the time Sarah finished explaining what had happened to them, both teens were pale and May had laid her head on her arms. But the situation being what it was, Karen was surprised they weren’t reacting more.

They’re emotionally exhausted, Sarah said mentally. And I suspect Lucas put in some minor blocks to stop them panicking. That would be the last thing we need – at least not until we’ve taught them some control.

I can see that, Karen said. But I’m not sure it’s healthy. They need to be able to grieve properly.

“You’re talking about us, aren’t you?” May lifted her head from her arms and looked at the two of them. “I can’t hear what you’re saying but I can hear you whispering.”

“We were,” Sarah admitted blandly. “And since you could hear us I’d guess you’re developing a mental affinity. That’s good; my brother Lucas will be able to train you. Mind is his speciality.”

May’s eyebrows show up. “So that’s why we’re not panicking. I did wonder but I couldn’t feel more than anxious even when I tried.” She paused and looked thoughtful. “I would assume it’s why I’m not having trouble accepting all this either.”

“It makes sense, May,” her brother said. “They wouldn’t want another ice storm. and Even without this poison they had to treat us for I think I might explode again if I panicked, and they really don’t have time to handle us being sceptical.”

“No,” she said. “But I’m not sure we’ll be so happy once we’re trained and he undoes whatever he did to us.” She hesitated. “He will undo it, won’t he?”

“Yes,” Sarah said. “But I hope by then you’ll understand and won’t be too angry. But For now we need to sort out what we’re going to do about your poor mother’s body. I don’t think arranging a funeral is going to be possible, I’m afraid.”

That made Paul start sobbing again and May buried her face in her hands.

Sarah poured more tea for them and gave Karen a meaningful look. Doesn’t look like he’s interfered in their grief too much to me.

“We’re already not getting a funeral for Dad,” May said suddenly. “Is there no way…”

“Not legally at the moment,” Sarah said. “And then there’s the fact no one knows she dead because-”

“Because you needed to cover up what happened,” May said.

“We did.” Ian was standing in the doorway. “But I’m afraid it didn’t entirely work. You’d better come to the lounge; they’ve got breaking news about Birmingham. Someone saw what happened.”

“They saw us?” Karen asked as they headed to the lounge. “Daniel was supposed to hide us.”

He shook his head. “No, not you. They saw what happened to him.” He nodded towards Paul. “It seems they suspect someone else was involved but Daniel hid you quite well.”

“We’ve got a problem,” Matthias said when they came into the lounge.

“Ian was just telling us,” Sarah said. “Someone saw what happened?”

“Yes,” he replied. “You just missed the report. There was a kid hiding from the rioters in the train station and he saw the attack and Paul here lose control as a result. He’s only young so there’s some debate as to if his testimony is reliable but it’s clear that the authorities are taking it seriously – perhaps too seriously for the rather vague description he was able to give and the fact you didn’t leave any evidence to corroborate his story behind.”

“I’d swear there was no one else in the station.” Karen narrowed her eyes at that. “Something is fishy here. You don’t think they already know about us?”

“They shouldn’t. Not with the amount of effort we spend hiding,” he said. “And yet, from the way they are reacting I’d almost think so.”

Sarah hummed to herself. “You’ve got some connections too, right? I know I have. I think it’s time to start tapping them, see if they know anything.”

“That’s not a bad idea,” he said. “But for now we need to figure out what to do if they do realise what’s happening. Have you called Stefan yet?”

“No,” Sarah said. “I was going to do it next.” She bit her lip. “I hope he’ll be okay with me.”

“It’ll be fine, Sal,” Matthias said. “Stefan likes you. You should call him now.”

    Oh, more problems…

I think it was adrian laverne tipping them off…

    PS: suspected typos and stuff:
“It makes sense, May,” her brother said. “They wouldn’t want another ice storm. *and Even* without this poison they had to treat us for I think I might explode again if I panicked, and they really don’t have time to handle us being sceptical.” => wrong capitalisation => …another ice storm. *And even* without this poison…

…and they really don’t have time to handle us being *sceptical*.” => typo suspected “c” instead of “k” => …to handle us being *skeptical*.”

Sarah poured more tea for them and gave Karen a meaningful look. *Doesn’t look like he’s interfered in their grief too much to me.* => should be in italics, I think…
