Side Story Three

Two Years Ago

The Trap Eighteen

It had all gone according to plan. The seven dragon knights – all of then except Julie – were lying on the floor of their rooms in Elapyron City. Sarah had arrived and was carefully hanging a pendant around each of their necks. The artifacts would hide them from Gerian and hopefully prevent them causing any more trouble.

“Are we taking them back to Brierthorne?” Jason asked.

She shook her head. “I don’t think that’s wise. I don’t want them anywhere near the school until we’re sure we’ve turned them away from that bloody dragon. We’re not equipped to keep prisoners, anyway. We’ll use their bonds to Earth and send them to their homes, then find them later.”

“But what if we can’t find them? And what about Julie?”

“I don’t think Julie is a danger. I just hope she can get home. As to the others, it’s a risk we’ll have to take. I’d say their reappearance should provoke news we can use to find them, but for some reason their disappearance didn’t so I’m dubious.” Sarah sighed. “But if we can’t find them, at least we’ll know that the dragon can’t either. We should send them back before they wake up.”

That bit went according to plan as well right up until the last two – Alison and Logan . As Kyle went to pick Alison, her eyes snapped open and she rolled away from him.

“I won’t go back!” She lashed out at him with her foot. “There’s nothing for me there. There’s no one to protect me there.” She pulled herself to her knees and glared at them for a long moment before breaking down in racking sobs, hugging her knees and rocking back and forth. “Want to stay here.”

“I-I think something bad happened to her on Earth,” Kyle said softly. “Julie said as much, didn’t she? And I think she told Darya more.”

“Let me talk to her,” Logan said softly. “I can usually calm her down.” Kyle looked around and saw the boy was awake and watching them. He waited for Kyle to nod and step back before crawling over to her. “Come on, Ali, calm down and think this through. Earth’s not that bad. I like it. You used to like it.”

For a minute it seemed Alison wasn’t listening as she just continued rocking and sobbing, but then she mumbled something about that being before.

“I know, but we can’t stay here. We lost and they aren’t going to let us stay here.” He paused then added, “And I think Julie may have been right. I know he saved your life but he was just using us.” He gave her a little hug. “You can come home with me. Mum and Dad always liked you and they’ll find some way to let you stay.”

“But I like it here,” Alison said quietly but she let him help her to her feet. “But if there’s no choice, I guess…” Tears were still running down her cheeks.

“There isn’t.” He turned to look at Sarah. “Can you send her back with me? Her family is dead, she’s got nowhere else to go.”

“I can.” She placed a hand on his shoulder. “Hmm, you’re homesick. Makes this easier.” A gate opened in front of them and the two headed through it.

After they’d gone, Sarah pinched the bridge of her nose. “I’m going to tell Matt what’s happened and get Ian monitoring the news. You should stay here. You need to find out what happened to Darya and the dragon may launch another rescue or a revenge attack.” She opened another gate and vanished.

Almost as soon as it had closed behind her, a voice struck into all of their heads.

Warriors, Heart friends, come to the gate tower immediately. I need your assistance urgently. The order would have brooked no dissent even if they hadn’t known it was the Core itself.

The Trap Seventeen

Darya jumped back, startled. Through the portal, he could vaguely see a brick house and quiet street of the sort he’d seen on Gaia. He stared at it for a moment, then turned to look at Julie. She was staring at the portal in shock.

“That’s my home,” she said softly. “Is this real or some kind of trick?”

“It’s no trick,” someone said from behind them. Darya jumped again – he hadn’t sensed the speaker there until she spoke. From Marama’s startled squawk, the same thing had happened to her. All three of them turned to find a tall asrai standing there. She gave a gentle smile at their surprise and cocked her head at Julie. Read the rest of this entry »

Karen watched Kyle pacing around the room. It had been a couple of hours since he woke up and Darya still wasn’t back. His absence was clearly starting to get to Kyle, who was twitching slightly and rubbing at his arms. “And why did he he suddenly shut me out like that?”

“Do you suppose it was a trap and that girl did something to him?” Jason asked.

“It’s not that,” Kyle said. “He was already really upset, then she told him something that made him furious. He blocked me out before I could work out what. I can’t even tell where he is.” He paced over to the window and stared out. “Why would he do that?”

“I don’t know, but I don’t like it,” Sean said. “You didn’t pick anything up?”

“Something about the Core,” Kyle frowned. “Other than that, no. But I have this churning feeling in my stomach.”

Karen felt much the same. The feeling that something bad was going to happen was scratching against her skin and drying her mouth. She wanted to reach out to Kyle and tell him everything would be okay, but she couldn’t because somehow, she knew it wouldn’t. She was trying to think of something to say when the alarms went off again. Kyle stiffened and Jason and Sean shot to their feet.

“That must be the other dragon knights come to rescue those three,” Jason said. He looked over at Kyle. “Are you okay to fight?”

“I’ll be fine,” Kyle said. “I need a distraction, anyway.”

Darya only managed to pull his fury under control when he heard Julie scream and realised the water surging around him had knocked her over. It wasn’t her fault, so he pulled the wave in with effort and managed to grunt an apology as she climbed to her knees.

“No, I’m sorry.” Julie gave him a sad smile. “I didn’t realise this would be so personal for you or I would have given you more warning. I mean, I knew that you wouldn’t be happy with what it had done, but I had no idea it was your heart friend’s family. What are you going to tell him?”

“I don’t know. I think it’ll kill us both if I try. I can feel it’ll kill us both once it no longer needs him.” He clenched his fists and forced himself not to lose control again. Something occurred to him and he gave her a curious look.

“Why didn’t it kill you guys? I mean it tried with you and Marama but what about the others?”

“Oh, Gerian can block it,” she said. “But he’s not protecting me any more. I’m not sure who stopped it that time. Maybe the first blue dragon intervened. We’re near his territory.” She shook her head even as she said that. “But I can’t see why. I mean with Gerian acting so close to his border he might watch, but why help me? From what I hear he’s okay, better than Gerian anyway, but I just want to go home! I do-” She gave a gasp as there was a popping sound and a glowing blue gate appeared in front of them.

Darya closed his eyes and tried to ignore the cold malice in the furious blast from the Core. Anger, disdain and hatred aimed not just at the dragons or the dragon knights but at Kyle and the others as well. He swallowed back nausea – it didn’t bear thinking about. Instead, he knelt down by the hercian bird and checked on her. She was still unconscious but now that Julie was awake she should be coming around soon. Read the rest of this entry »

It didn’t take Darya long to catch up with Julie; he only had to follow the trail of rage dripping off her as she stormed towards the Core gate. But why was she heading there?

“Where do you think you’re going?” He grabbed her hand just as she entered the clearing around it.

She scowled at him and yanked her arm free. “To rescue Marama. It’s hurting her to shut me up.” Read the rest of this entry »

Karen watched Julie carefully. The girl hadn’t said anything since they got her back to their rooms. Instead, she had sat on the floor and sipped at the tea Jason had brought her after they’d secured the other three in one of the side rooms. Karen could feel Alban seething. She reached out and squeezed his hand.

Are you okay? she asked mentally.

They killed my father, he said bitterly. And we’re just sending them home.

Ah. She squeezed his hand again. They’re just kids. They’ve been used.

She isn’t, he said. She’s old enough to know better.

“You’re planning a trap for the others aren’t you?” Julie said. “With Shell, Ali and Logan as bait. It might work – he’s not very bright.” She shook her head. “No, that’s not right – he’s intelligent enough. He just doesn’t use it much – too stubborn.”

“Why did you help him? He’s a dragon.” Karen asked. Read the rest of this entry »

Karen knew she couldn’t this up much longer. She doubted that Zillah was doing any better but she couldn’t spare the energy to check. They’d managed to stabilise the boy but that wouldn’t last if they stopped. She gritted her teeth and continued pouring energy into him, even though spots were starting to appear before her eyes.

“Hey.” A gentle hand touched her shoulder and she looked up to see a pair of male wood haltia standing there. “Good job, we’ll take over now.” Read the rest of this entry »

“All the better. He won’t be able to fight back then.” Alison scowled at Logan’s frown. “What?”

“It’s wrong, Ali,” he said softly. “You can’t go attacking people who can’t fight back. I’ve explained this to you.” Read the rest of this entry »

Sean careened into the closest dragon before Kyle and Jason were even in position. A storm of metal shards formed a tornado around him and ripped through his opponent’s wings, tearing the membranes and severing muscles and tendons. It screamed and reared back from him, allowing another shard to sever an artery in its neck.

The creature collapsed to the ground, screaming, and began to disintegrate into beams of red tinged light. Sean watched it coldly as if waiting for something, then formed another metal shard in his hand. Read the rest of this entry »

Kyle was extinguishing the third burning building he’d come to when Sean touched his mind.

Kyle! I think this is all a trick. Come here- An image of a small building they’d passed just before they arrived at the city dropped into his mind. It’s where the Core Gate is and I think the dragon knights are attacking it. Read the rest of this entry »
