A/N: I have recently updated my Patreon. I’m going to be doing more with it in 2017 including a bunch of free stuff so it’s worth a look even if you don’t want to back it.
“Talking? No,” Darlryan replied blandly. “Screaming at each other, shouting, occasionally coming to blows but not talking. Something happened a while back and Alsia holds a grudge forever. Of course I actually deserve it and while I would never admit it to her Kaylaria would bang our heads together if she saw us.” He closed his eyes. “Look I don’t know why the Key had called you though I can hazard a few guesses. But I do know what you can do for me. Teach Kate swordplay. You’ve always been better at it than I am.” Read the rest of this entry »

“Eh?” Kate asked.
“This aura is human,” he said. “I’m trying to work out who Xantaria might have locked away in there. It’s good though – a human should be easier to deal with than one of the Lost Ones. I really didn’t want a trail of sick or dead humans on my conscience, Well as long as they weren’t conscious for the past several thousand years. That would wreck anyone’s mind.”
“The Lost Ones are like that shadowy thing that was attacking those boys?” she asked. “Was that your doing?” Read the rest of this entry »

“Ah,” he said. “I see! Yes, that’s a good question. We don’t need to attract her attention until I need her distracting but we should do a trial run first. It’ll be easy enough, but I’ll have to make some preparations, and not is as good a time as any.” He summoned a small spar of metal between his hands and began to pour energy into it so he could use it as a wedge to open one of the cracks in the prison long enough to pull something through. “I’m going to organise a jailbreak. Once I let her sense it Ophelia will come to deal with whatever comes through and then it’s your turn.” Read the rest of this entry »

“I already know that you can throw things accurately, Kate, but I want you to be able to do it both physically and mentally.”
“Okay.” Kate levitated the next knife and aimed it at the target. Just as she released it and a pebble hit her in the small of the back. She flinched, of course, and the knife missed the target and embedded itself in the fence. She turned and glared at him. “Oi! What was that for?” Read the rest of this entry »

“Okay,” Kate said. “What does she look like so I can avoid her.”
“Good question,” he said. “Hold on.” He held out his hand and an image hovered above it. A dark-skinned woman with long black hair, glowing blue eyes and wings of pale blue ice. “This is Alsia.”
Kate stared at the image, there was something familiar about the woman but she couldn’t place her and she was certain she had never seen anyone with ice wings. She commented on that and he snorted. Read the rest of this entry »

Kate woke up about one in the morning. Instinctively she reached for the light switch then paused as she realised she could see perfectly. It must be an aspect of her new powers. She sat up slowly and carefully moved her head from side to side before sighing in relief. It had stopped hurting. Whatever her benefactor had done had fixed her completely because her head hadn’t felt this clear in a year or so. She pulled herself in to a cross-legged in position on the bed and began lifting things in he bedroom as he had instructed. She started with perfume bottles and hairbrushes and working up to furniture. Read the rest of this entry »

About an hour later Kate stirred and Darlryan hurried back to her side.
“Urgh!” She groaned. “My head hurts worse than ever. And that hurt even worse than my head does.”
“I know,” he said in a soft tone. “But it should be the last time you have to suffer one of these. We’ll need to watch out in case whoever did this to you tries to relay them.” Read the rest of this entry »

Darlryan held Kate’s shoulder’s as she vomited and reached out gently to touch her mind. The explosion of pain made him pull back and stare at her. What on earth was going on with her? Practicising shouldn’t cause an effect like this unless he’d overworked her and he didn’t think that he had. He shot a mental instruction to Laxmi to bring some painkillers and continued rubbing her shoulders until the heaving stopped. By that time Laxmi had returned with water and some co-codamol. Kate swallowed them with a genuinely grateful ‘thank you’ and looked up at him wearily. Read the rest of this entry »

“I know,” Alsia said. “But dropping them back into that hell is not acceptable.”
“I understand,” Tilaran’s mother said. “We’re working on some sort of alternative warded confinement but so far it wouldn’t hold.” Read the rest of this entry »

“We have a visitor!” Tilaran must have removed whatever ward had been keeping his wife way because she was standing in the doorway with her arms folded. “You should activate the wards and see her off but I’m sure that you won’t.”
“What?” Tilaran said. “Visitor?” Read the rest of this entry »
