David stiffened slightly, he knew what that meant.

“Emma?” He lifted her hands away and turned to look at her. She was smiling nervously at him and chewing on her lower lip.

“Hi, Dave.” Read the rest of this entry »

The kitchen was large, bright and clean with marble work surfaces and copper pans hanging on the walls. He hadn’t really had time to appreciate the cosy atmosphere on his previous visits, but it was very homey. There was no one else there and David frowned to himself as he tried to remember what had been bothering him. Oh yes, that wine bottle had been unlabelled. He looked in one of the two fridges and found it full of normal food and drink but the other was full of similar bottles, all neatly stacked. He took one out and looked at it.

“It’s cow’s blood.” Leisa said from the doorway. The bottle slipped from his shaking fingers as he whirled to face her. There was a blur and Leisa was standing in front of him holding the bottle. “It’s mixed with wine and a couple of other things to preserve and enhance it. Please be careful with it.” Read the rest of this entry »

“Hi, may I join you?”

David looked around and saw a pretty young woman with short dark hair and dressed as a flapper.

“Of course!” He nodded and moved up to make room for her. “Hi, I am David Carter.” He extended his hand. Read the rest of this entry »

David eventually decided on a cowboy outfit for the party and spent the afternoon trawling through charity shops looking for the things he needed. When evening came around he paced nervously in front of his window. He wanted to see them arrive so he could save Sarah from getting wet. The storm which had broken earlier showed no signs of abating. It was going be a wild night weather wise. Hopefully the party would be nowhere near as wild. Thinking about it made his mouth dry and his legs wobble. He didn’t get many invitations to parties and the circumstances behind this one were making him twitchy.

As promised it was exactly eight pm when Michael’s Range Rover pulled up outside his house. David immediately grabbed and umbrella and headed out into the rain. Michael, who was dressed as Tarzan, reached back and opened the door. Read the rest of this entry »

Anna was vaguely aware of being tucked up in a bed but could make no sense of what David and Tanya were saying to each other. She just wished they’d be quiet and sighed with relief when they left the room and went downstairs.

Her mother was still there, though, standing at the foot of the bed. Even through the headache she knew that was wrong somehow, but she couldn’t remember why. She just stood there regarding her with the smile Anna remembered so well. Read the rest of this entry »

“What?” David stared at Tanya as his brain tried to process what she’d said.

“You really had no idea did you,” Tanya asked. “I though perhaps Marie might have told you. She followed Uncle Miles once.”

“Dad was a werewolf?” David thought about that and his eyes widened as he realised the implications. “Silver! He was killed by silver wasn’t he?”

“Yes. We aren’t sure yet if a hunter got him or if it was just a stupid accident, but it’s looking more and more like it was a hunter. But he had no bites or scratches and the Order believes that myth about it being a contagion. No one should have suspected him.” She must have seen the surprise on his face because she grinned. “Werewolves are born not made.” Read the rest of this entry »

Anna felt wonderful when she woke the next morning. After she’d gone back to sleep she’d had an untainted dream, one which was all her own. She just wished that she could remember it properly. She knew it had been wild and exhilarating and she’d been running for the sheer joy of it, but she was sure there had been much more of it.

She bounced out of bed and went to make breakfast as a surprise for Jason. He usually cooked all their meals after all. Everything seemed brighter and more colourful than usual and she felt calmer than she had in weeks. It must be some sort of hangover from her dream. Read the rest of this entry »

Chapter Ten Part Two

Anna woke from the dream and looked at the clock. It was just after 3am and would be getting light soon. She felt like yelling in triumph, but that would wake her older brother and Jason needed his sleep. She was certain that she had just won an important victory over her enemy.

I am going to find you, monster, and then we’ll destroy you. She really hoped that he could hear her thoughts right now. Even if my friends and I have to die to do it. You picked the wrong girl for your games. Read the rest of this entry »

Chapter Ten Part Two

Once Ragnar reached his home, he circled a few times trying to sense if the werewolves were still in pursuit. Once he was satisfied that they were not he circled down and entered his home through a slightly open window. Reforming at the base of the stairs. Even the wolves should not be able to follow him now, but damn he was hungry and Caroline would still have garlic in her blood, and even if she did not he wanted to leave her a few more days to recover. He reached out and touched George’s mind hopefully, but his slave psychic was at work and would not be back before dawn. That left only one alternative. He went into the kitchen and retrieved one of his bottles of blood wine. It tasted bland at best and bad at worst but the ancient recipe would sustain him for a time. He grabbed a glass and stomped down to Caroline’s cell in the cellar.

She was awake, lying on her bed reading one of the romance novels he had bought for her. She was getting used to a night schedule it seemed. She looked up at him with a smile which faded to a concerned frown when she saw the still healing wounds on his face. “What happened to you, Master?” Read the rest of this entry »

Haventon Born

Chapter Ten Part One

Ragnar paced angrily in front of the church gates. He didn’t know who had rescued the young vampire hunter, but they couldn’t stay in there forever. When they came out he would be waiting for them. Inside his head a little traitor voice pointed out that they wouldn’t have to wait forever, just until sunrise. If he somehow managed to resist returning home to sleep even the human boy would stand a good chance of out running him in daylight. Ragnar swore to himself in his long dead native tongue. He just had to make them come out before then.

He stared up at the moon and whispered a prayer before reaching out towards the church to see if he could recognise who he was dealing with. But it seemed that even his mind was forbidden from the church because all that he could sense was a painful void of white light. He clenched his fists and scowled up at the building. He wasn’t a Christian and did not care what some alien god thought of him but it was very inconvenient though. Read the rest of this entry »
