As the ships formed up ready for the first jump of their journey Mori signalled all the ships.
“Slight change of plan,” it said. “We’ve had a message from the Council and the first stop will be to Talis Station.”
“Well it’s en route to Aletheia,” Amapreet said. “But why?” Read the rest of this entry »

A/N: Good news! There will be a new Haventon chapter tomorrow.

Amanpreet took advantage of the amount of comm traffic flying between the ships as their guests arrived to slip in a privte line to Promise.
“Can I help you, Captaain?” Promise responded promptly.
“Yes,” Amanpreet said without preamble. “What do you think of Summer.” Read the rest of this entry »

The next day Amanpreet found Niobe sitting at her station even though she wasn’t due on duty for a couple of hours. She had a line open to the contact ship and was deep in conversation with Lin. Amanpreet hadn’t realised that Lin was from Cels like Niobe until she realised they were using Trava, an obscure Anglic language that was spoken in parts of Western Cels’ but not many other planets. Amanpreet knew the odd word, enough to recognise that they were discussing translations of one of the Coronan languages but not enough to follow their conversation exactly. She listened for a moment before clearing her throat.
Niobe looked around and grinned. “You should have told me Lin was the team linguist. We used to play together when were little.” Read the rest of this entry »

A/N: I’m sorry for another skipped week. I will try and do better. On the upside there should be a new chapter of Haventon tomorrow (If I get it typed in).

The next few days were quiet. The contact ship was passing messages between Corona and the Council, while Promise was negotiating his people providing transport for the Coronans. Both sets of talks seemed to be going well.
Amanpreet has returned to the Whisper to wait as she did not have much to add to the matter. She’d asked Kayla if she thought the Vaians could be behind the problems with Kiath and her newest navigator had frowned at the wall of her cabin for several minutes before replying. A/N: I’ve made some tweaks to my Patreon – check it out. You can also check out a sample chapter of my Traditional Fantasy WIP “Shattered”. If pledges reach $50/month I’ll start posting on this site fortnightly (I have 20 chapters written so far).

“That was sudden,” Mahir said. “I wonder what made Promise react like that.”
“It’s gone to signal its kind like it said,” Summer said. “That’s all.” The Mez seemed quite certain of that. “I think it likes us and wants to help.”
Amanpreet nodded. “I think that’s right, Promise has been very helpful.” Even as she spoke Promise re-emerged from hyperspace and signaled them. Read the rest of this entry »

“It’s likely to take quite a while for every representative on the Council to record their messages,” Lin said. “So now we wait again. We have had a message back that they concur with our idea and they want Promise to record its kinds message as it is the only one they currently have contact with.”
“I will do that,” Promise’s reply came over the intercom. “I think my kind can form a mutually beneficial relationship with them as well since they’ll need hyperspace ships and it will take a while to grow any for them.” Read the rest of this entry »

Nobody asked what the message said because it was clear from the way Lin closed her eyes and held her headphones to her ears that she was trying to block them all out while she translated the it. Instead they all stood in silence and waited for her to finish.
It took far longer than actually receiving the message had and she was obviously going over it several times. Eventually she nodded to herself and looked around at them. Read the rest of this entry »

A/N: As I mentioned last week I’ll be stopping taking prompts for a few weeks while I build up some buffer. (Torvawk, I’m saving your prompt from last week’s comments for when I tart taking them again).

The Bridge of the contact ship was partitioned as well, a fact which made Amanpreet frown. While Fish and Sticks could both be modified to carry passengers of multiple species quite easily they were usually only crewed by one species – or two for the Ishtari – because of their radically different physiological needs. Indeed Amanpreet had never heard of a multi-environment crew before but that was obviously what she was seeing here.
She mentioned it to Rick who laughed quietly. Read the rest of this entry »

“I always think that drink looks delicious,” Summer said as Lin poured tea for all the humans present. “Completely incompatible with our biology, of course, but it looks delicious.”
“You’d probably hate the taste even if it wasn’t far too hot for you,” Lin said. “It doesn’t bother you, us drinking it, does it?”
“No, not at all,” he said. “If it did I’d just arrange something for us as well. It might things go more smoothly.” Read the rest of this entry »

The ship bearing the contact team was a multi-environment Fish, one of the largest Amanpreet had ever seen. Oni and his team headed over to speak with them and Amanpreet accompanied them.
The leader of the human section of thee contact team was a statuesque black woman with hair cropped close to her skull. She introduced herself as Alice as she shook hands with the team but not Amanpreet, clearly dismissing her as unimportant because she was only captain of the science team’s transport and not a scientist herself. Amanpreet hissed to herself at the slight and clenched her fists but didn’t comment only because Sangat put his hand on her arm and shook his head. She hung back a little and looked at him.
