Whisper of Damkina
Due to the fact that I’m currently out of my house over 13 hours a day between my temp job and the commute there to this week’s installment of Whisper will be up on Sunday. Sorry.
Dragon Wars will be up on Friday as usual.

A/N: Just a short installment this week.

Vanna had excelled herself again, Amanpreet decided. The table in the Mess was covered with multiple dishes all giving off delicious smells and she had even managed to rustle up a chocolate cake from somewhere. Oni looked slightly embarrassed when they led him into the canteen.
“You didn’t have to go to all this trouble,” he said.
“It’s no trouble,” Vanna said with a grin. “I’ll take any excuse to make a feast.” She pushed an empty bowl at him. “Help yourself, since you’re the birthday boy you get to go first.” Read the rest of this entry »

“So what does the council say?” Amanpreet asked when she reached the bridge with Oni in her wake.
“Good news, I think,” Niobe said. “They want us to stay put here and continue our measurements while they pull together an emergency contact team. She checked her screen. “And they wish us to see if the Corona system will help fill in our lexicons for the main Coronan languages and send them to them.” She gave a half smile. “It already did that so I sent the information on.”

A/N: This part is a bit short compared to usual. There’s no reason except I hit a natural break.

While they waited for news of the council’s decision the scientists that Amanpreet had brought to Corona to study the first space mission continued with their measurements.
Once she was sure that the Coronan system had the situation with the railguns well in hand Amanpreet joined them in the makeshift lab they had set up in the mess. Read the rest of this entry »

Amanpreet didn’t have to wait until they returned to normal space to find out that Kayla and Rick had been able to hear her singing because with in minutes of her beginning to hum the main melody of her favourite song in her head she heard a male voice join in singing the complex harmony and then Kayla’s voice singing a counterpoint. They might not be able to hear the words but their music kept the three of them entertained through the journey.
As soon as they emerged from hyperspace Amanpreet signaled the other two.
“That was awesome!” she said. Read the rest of this entry »

“She’s not made for travelling this fast in normal space,” Vanna said as the Whisper shot through space in pursuit of the asteroid. She was holding on to the console in front of her and staring at the reading in horror. “I’m not sure the dampeners will continue stopping us being turned into chunky salsa if we keep this up. They’re showing amber already.” Read the rest of this entry »

The first leg of the trip from Talis to Corona went off without a hitch and the Whisper and its
escort emerged from hyperspace at the waypoint they’d designated before the jump in order to
swap navigators and check for messages.

A/N: Hi readers! Repeating this from Monday for anyone who only reads Whisper. Just a quick note to say thanks to all my regular readers. Thanks especially to my Patreon donors and to Alexander Hollins for the first review of Whisper on the WFG. Other readers please comment here if you’d be willing to donate to my patreon with better/different perks (say what) or if you’d be willing to give to a more traditional crowdfunding campaign to raise a lump sum to allow me to write full time for a few months (I need at least £1000 a month for this). You can also help by buying The Dragon Wars Saga books, recommending Whisper to your friends, reviewing or simply by voting. Thanks again.

Amanpreet and her crew were prepping the Whisper for departure the next morning when Midori appeared again. She looked very worried.
“We found the source of the meteors,” she said without preamble. “We’re warning all traffic into and out of the system because we’ve destroyed this one but we don’t know if there are more.”
“More of what?” Amanpreet asked. Read the rest of this entry »

“So tell me more about Corona,” Amanpreet said later that evening. “If I recall correctly it’s near the Cascade Hyperspace Storm. I hope hyperspace is stable there.”
“Oh yes,” Oni said. “It’s close to the Cascade but not so much that the hyperspace distortions reach it.” He tilted his head. “And the Cascade has been shrinking for the last few years. The hyperspace experts – such as they are – say it should calm down to the point of no longer being a navigation hazard in the next decade or so.”
“Really,” Amanpreet said. “I didn’t know hyperspace storms died down. I thought they were permanent fixtures.” Read the rest of this entry »
