“How are you doing?” Sonia smiled at Rantalryan. “Is your essence healing from your transformation?”
“It is,” he said. “I’m probably well enough to swear allegiance and join you soon.” He cast an enquiring look at Alaryia, who nodded.
“Another few days, I think,” Alaryia said. “Your essence seems settled now but Mitakrian did such a number on you by making you fight so soon that I want to be sure.”
“It’s fine,” he said. “My father said much the same thing when he visited. He wants to meet Sonia as well. I think he wants to check he approves of the court I’m joining.”
“I would be honoured,” Sonia said.
Rantalryan turned to Lydia. “And how are you, Lydia-ida? Becoming a dragon is harsh.”
“I’m okay,” she said. “A bit irritated about not being able to fight tomorrow.”
“Trust me, they are wise to stop you,” he said.
“But I don’t even know where I’m going to be hiding,” she said.
“Oh, we’re going there next,” Matthias said. “There’s someone I should have introduced you all to a while back.”
“And the answer to where he was that he couldn’t sense Dan was in danger when Emms tortured him,” Andrew said.
“None of us sensed it,” Lydia said. “And we usually do sense when each other on in danger.”
“I did,” Sonia said. “But I couldn’t do anything. Sibling bonds are less intense so I suspect he occluded them.”
“And dad couldn’t sense it because of where he was,” Dan said. “I don’t understand.”
“Sensory overload, I suspect,” Alaryia said. “Which means I know where he was. Well he’s definitely leaving Lydia in one of the safest places in the Heartlands.”
“You’re quite correct,” Matthias said.
“Will someone please tell me where we are going?” Daniel asked.
“The Dark Sanctuary,” Alaryia said. “It’s the only place he could have been that might have had that effect.”
“Oh!” Daniel said. “Yes, I see. That does make sense. So this someone you’re going to introduce us to is He who was Indarien.”
“Meh.” Karen said. “No offence, Dad, but can I sit this out, please?”
Matthias chuckled and shook his head. “You’ll be fine, Kaz. He can light the interior.”
“He can light the inside of the Dark Sanctuary?” Karen sounded sceptical. “That just seems wrong somehow.”
“Of course he can,” Matthias said. “Just in case he has visitors who can’t see in the dark. I promise it won’t be too unpleasant and you should meet him at least once.”
“I’d like to meet him,” Alban said. “Mother always talks about him. She’s fond of him.” He took Karen’s hand. “It’ll be fine.”
“And we need you to get the coordinates in your head so you can jump in an emergency to back up Lyd and Drew,” Sonia said.
Karen threw her hands in the air. “Fine! I’ll go to the scary dark place.”
“Karen has a particularly strong dislike for areas of the opposite affinity,” Sonia said.
“Yes, Ilona mentioned that,” Alaryia said. “I was the same at her age… and yes, I do remember that far back.” She smiled at Karen. “It does get better but only if you face up to it.”
Karen didn’t reply. Instead, she put her hands in her pockets and scowled. “Let’s get this over with then.”
