The room Naria had pulled him into was a cozy sitting room decorated in cool blues and soft greens and lit by softly glowing crystal lamps.

The only people in the room apart from him and Naria were a dragon boy about the same age as Karilya and a tall, slender woman, who were seated on one of the comfortable couches. Indaturan was waiting for them in a quiet bed chamber which Talira had guided them to as soon as they arrived with Ken. Once Ken had been settled on the bed, Indaturan sat beside him, and laid a hand on Ken’s forehead and closed his eyes. After a moment he swore harshly in draconic and reopened them to stare at Sarah.

“The person who did this to him did it with a single psychic spike?” he asked.

The Bridge of the contact ship was partitioned as well, a fact which made Amanpreet frown. While Fish and Sticks could both be modified to carry passengers of multiple species quite easily they were usually only crewed by one species – or two for the Ishtari – because of their radically different physiological needs. Indeed Amanpreet had never heard of a multi-environment crew before but that was obviously what she was seeing here.

An exhausted-looking healer was kneeling by the bed when Sarah led the group into the room where Ken was being treated. Ken was still unconscious and Arnold was kneeling on his other side, watching his brother with an anxious expression. Sarah cleared her throat and both young men looked around. The healer immediately leapt to his feet.

“Come on,” Sonia said before hurrying towards stairs. Her face was pale and drawn. Lydia rather thought her mother felt as nauseated by what they’d just seen as she did. What she didn’t expect was to find Julie leaning against the wall just outside the squash courts shuddering violently.

“You aren’t actually going to leave her like that, are you?” Matthias asked.

“You’d probably hate the taste even if it wasn’t far too hot for you,” Lin said. “It doesn’t bother you, us drinking it, does it?”

I spoke to the healer who’s treating Ken and they aren’t sure he’ll live. He certainly won’t ever use his abilities again if he does after the way you fried his neurons.”

“Seems a reasonable suggestion to me,” Julie said.

“Me too,” Trent said.

“No!” There was a loud noise from the satellite family end of the table as someone leapt to their feet, sending their chair clattering to the floor. “So Matthias said that you have a large family,” Alexandra said. “How many of you are their?”

“About thirty,” Faith replied. “And a couple of smaller families. I’m told that’s quite a lot.” She paused at the startled whispers that broke out around the room. “I take it that was correct.”
