“Okay, I think we need to back up few steps,” Sonia said. “Because I don’t see how you get from someone needing to make Marian forget how to block the Morgans to Celeste Lave–”

“Damn! Are you telling me that Celeste is James’ daughter?” Matthias interrupted. “We always wondered based on the timing and Celeste’s primary but Kezia always denied it.” He glanced sideways at Sonia. “One night stand in their last year at high school.” Read the rest of this entry »

“I think it’s a wonderful idea,” Sonia said. “I remember you as a kid, Marian, and Mitakrian ruined your life as much as he did ours. A new life would be good for you as well, I think.” She shook her head. “Good grief, Marian, how did you even keep going when you were in all that pain? I wasn’t in half as bad a state and I was crippled.” Read the rest of this entry »

“I have no idea,” Indaturan said. “As far as I know, my aunt had no connection to the clans that initiated the purge.” He put his hand over Marian’s. “Show me what you are sensing?

“Of course.” She closed her eyes. They stood there a moment before Indaturan pulled back with a gasp.

“What the heck! I think there’s more information under that lock than in the main content.” He scowled at the block. “We need to find the password.” Read the rest of this entry »

Marian did look better, Lydia decided. When she’d last seen her on the day after the attack on the school, the woman had noticeably been in pain when she moved – but not any more. There were still pain lines on her face but they were probably mental rather than physical. She was sitting in a chair with a crystal block in her hands and several others in a basket next to her, but she looked up as they entered and immediately leapt to her feet.

“Mummy!” She ran to Julie and hugged her. Read the rest of this entry »

True the her word, Joanne returned a few minutes later with a bag slung over her shoulder.

“You were right,” she said. “Mum wasn’t happy. She thinks you’re planning to kidnap me and hold me hostage. I asked why you’d let me come and explain if that was the case and it was my brain that was torn up, not hers, so she didn’t have a say. That shut her up but she’ll fret like crazy, I can tell.”

“You pack quickly,” Sonia said. Read the rest of this entry »

While most people were still recovering from Joanne’s announcement, Darlryan was scowling thoughtfully at her.

“Ind can probably fix what the young lady has done to herself so far,” he said. “But it’s interesting. What she’s describing isn’t clairvoyance, it’s a temporal affinity. We always knew it was technically possible but I don’t recall any confirmed cases. If it tears you up that way, I guess we know why, now. We can fix it for now but continually fixing you isn’t practical.” Read the rest of this entry »

Joanne was a dark-haired teen, maybe fourteen or fifteen and tall for her age. She smiled at them all as soon as she came in.

“I’m glad you called me to help with this,” she said. “But I should warn you: my mother wanted me to plant some kind of essence bug while I was here but I’m not going to do that. There’s too much at stake to be trying to score points in our families’ petty feud.” Read the rest of this entry »

“Okay, he just needs to finish something and then he’ll jump in.” Laxmi put the phone away. “He’ll ping your wards first so you don’t have to take them down for more than a second.”

“That’s good,” Sonia said. “Thank you for warning us, Carrie.”

“Yes, thank you for warning us about this, Carrie,” Matthias said. “It’s almost human of you.” Read the rest of this entry »

“Okay, so that’s two places in the other world which we need to visit after the meeting,” Matthias said. “But we do need to get this done first.”

“Get what done first?” Lydia asked.

“The reason all the families are having ally meetings tonight,” Matthias said. “And the reason Laxmi is here. Darlryan has sent word through Kiataran while you were sleeping that he’s ready to try using the staff to close the crack tomorrow. He’s certain Xantaria will try and stop him and he wants us to be ready both to run interference and deal with any attack she might launch on Earth in an attempt to distract him.” Read the rest of this entry »

“You know, if the other families knew we were having clandestine meetings they’d assume we were plotting against them,” Julie said.

“Which is why it’s not clandestine,” Matthias said. “The other families know about our meeting and several families are holding meetings – and anyone, even enemies, can request scrying access at any time during the meetings.”

“And no one told us about this,” Julie said “I think people still don’t trust us.” Read the rest of this entry »
